Chapter One - Moving

"We used to have it all planned

We thought we knew what it all looked like

We were looking out on the greatest view"

~Josef Salvat, Open Season

I had just gotten out of school and was making my way home. I passed many people like I did every day, at least twice. There were always people out and about in New York, it was the city that never sleeps.

Once I got home my dad was sitting at the table, entertaining my seven year old sister, Bailey, who was deaf.

"Hey, Blaine, how was school?" He asked.

I set my bag by the door and smiled, "Good, how was work?"

His smile suddenly faded, "Come sit down, son." He said and I took a seat beside my little sister. I signed a hello to her and she smiled.

"What is it?" I asked, scared for the answer.

I didn't hear or see my two year old brother, "Is Braxton okay?" I asked.

My dad smiled, "He's fine, Blaine. I got laid off today." My mouth fell open but before I could say anything he continued, "There are no other jobs available in this area, especially that offer enough money to keep the apartment. This decision only really effects you, so I'm sorry."

"What is it?" I asked.

"We are moving in with my parents until I can steady us financially."

This was all my mom's fault. She couldn't handle the responsibility of raising three children, or one at all. So as soon as she had Braxton, she bolted, leaving us on our own.

"To Texas?" I asked.

He nodded, "I know this must be difficult and I'm sorry it has to be this way, but I promise things will get better." He offered a smile.

"Really dad, how do you think the kids in Texas will feel about a gay in their schools?"

My dad frowned, "Not everyone in Texas is close minded, son. Your grandparents love you just the same and I'm sure a lot of other people will. And it will already be summer by the time we move. I'm letting you finish you're school year here." I had told my grandparents over one of the many Skype calls we had every year.

"This is all moms fault." I hissed, "Ever since she left everything's been going down hill."

"Don't blame your mother."

I rolled my eyes, "You should let her go dad, find someone else, anyone else will be better than that bitch!"

"Blaine Matthew Campbell, do not use that language in reference to your mother or at all!" My dad was raising his voice.

"She was never my mom and you know it." I said, my voice lowering, "You were my only parent, you are the reason we were anywhere near a family." I was almost whispering now, looking down. I never liked talking about my mom with my dad, he would always chose her side because he loved her, even after what she did to us.

My parents met in Texas, she was a singer and my dad was a football jock. My dad got offers for so many colleges to play football professionally but he turned them down to move to New York to help my mom pursue her dreams.

They were in love and they didn't have any problems until they had Bailey. My mom was up for caring for me but she just didn't know how to interact with Bailey and when she found out she was pregnant with Brax I think that made her even more overwhelmed, so she bolted as soon as he was born and she could leave the hospital.
