"Psst."
I was standing off to the side later that night. Turning, I saw one of the blood slaves from earlier.
"May I help you?" I asked. I did not wish to speak with him, but I decided to be polite nevertheless.
"Over here," he motioned me over. Once I was standing by his side, he continued.
"You've been in the business awhile, huh," he said in a lazy country drawl. I supposed some might find it charming, but I did not care for the accent myself.
"I suppose you could say that."
"And you've never been bitten?" the pity in his voice disgusted me, but I replied all the same.
"Correct, I have not been bitten."
The blood slaves eyes widened, "Wow, I thought it was just a rumor. Guess it really is true."
I smiled awkwardly, feeling like a bug under a microscope. I did not enjoy speaking of myself and this boy was beginning to make me feel uncomfortable, "I'm sorry, I didn't catch your name?"
The focus momentarily shifted to the boy, "Oh, right. I'm Daniel, nice to meet you."
I was hoping to continue this line if conversation, but my luck would not have it. Daniel continued, "You're Angel, of course. They've been talking about you all night. You're one special girl."
"Hardly," I laughed, "I am just a new toy to them, they will grow weary of me within a week."
It was true. Vampires were known to have short attention spans, especially when it came to blood slaves. At the moment, I was new and shiny, but give it a few days and I'd be yesterday's news. They would move on to some other new thing and that would be the end of my time in the lime light. The day could not arrive fast enough.
I was relieved to leave the awkward conversation when Master Jake called me to his side. I hurried over as fast as I could as not to keep him waiting. Master Jake would not appreciate my wasting time.
"You called, Master?"
Master Jake frowned in annoyance, "Why were you talking to that boy?"
"I-I am not sure, Master. I just thought -"
"Did I give you permission to talk to him?" Master Jake cut me off, his temper shortening.
My eyes fell to the ground, "No, Master, you did not give me permission."
"Then what, might I ask, did you 'just think'?"
"Nothing," my attention moved to the ground, "I did not think."
"This will not happen in the future, do you understand?" Master Jake was stern, commanding. I dared not argue with him.
"Yes, Master."
"Good," he turned, "Now return to your chambers. I do not wish to see you."
I was ever so slightly disappointed to be leaving so soon. I was quite fond of social gatherings in the vampire community with their extravagance and charm. I could tell Master Jake was upset, though. My behavior was thoughtless and disobedient, I should have known better than to converse with that boy. Master Jake was a strict sort of vampire and he liked to be in control. I had to have a certain amount of admiration for his ways. He was superior and he made sure everyone was aware of that. I would have to think of my actions more in the future if I wanted to stay on his good side.

Later that night, I woke up to footsteps in the halls. I told myself I shouldn't investigate. I told myself I should ignore the noise and go back to sleep, but as always, my curiosity got the better of me. I crept across the room and opened the door just far enough for me to see without drawing any attention.
There were two figures. They were walking down the halls, casually talking and laughing together. One was definitely Master Jake, I could tell by the way he carried himself as he walked. He was with a girl, a pretty girl. Her blonde hair and big dark eyes sparkled under the lights as they walked and I couldn't help but feel jealous of her looks. The two approached and I listened intently.
"You have quite the lovely new blood slave," she spoke.
Master Jake smiled, "Indeed."
"Have you tasted her yet?" the girl asked curiously.
"No, I'm saving her for something... special."
The girl licked her lips seductively, "We could share her if you want?"
I nearly fainted. There was no way I could allow that to happen to me. I would let Master Jake do many things, but even I have my limits. Thankfully, so did Master Jake.
"No!" his voice snapped, "She is not for sharing. She is mine."
The girl laughed, seemingly unbothered by the outburst, "You never have been one for sharing, have you Jake?"
The voices started getting fainter and fainter and I was just about to slip back into my bed when, with as much noise as possible, I fell forward and onto the floor of the hallway.
Master Jake and the girl turned to me, I could practically feel the anger radiating from Master Jake, but the girl was more curious about my presence.
"Charity," Master Jake said calmly, "I will have to ask you to leave."
The girl, Charity, stood frozen in place, head tilted to one side.
"Now," Master Jake's voice rose, bringing her back to reality.
Without anther word, Charity scampered off down the halls without so much as a glance back towards us. Apparently I wasn't the only one who was scared of Master Jake.
Master Jake waited until he was sure no one could hear us.
"Get up," his voice sent shivers down my spine. I had an uneasy feeling about this. Master Jake's voice was calm, but there was an edge to it. An edge that said he was very close to losing his cool demeanor.
Without a word, I followed him through multiple winding halls and staircases until we came to a large room. His bedroom.
I swallowed my fear and looked Master Jake straight in the eyes. I immediately regretted this decision when I was met with a icey death glare and I instantly shrunk back against the stone wall.
"For someone who's been in the business for so long, you make some very stupid mistakes," Master Jake began pacing the room, reminding me of a shark circling its prey.
"I am sorry, Master," my voice shook involuntarily, my heart beating double time as I scrambled for something, anything else to say.
Master Jake smirked at my pathetic attempt at an apology, "Sorry?" he stepped forward. His anger only thinly veiled by his smile, "Sorry isn't good enough."
