I struggled to keep my composure as Master Jake's eyes pierced into mine. It was the most terrifying moment of my life when I fell into the hall, but I knew the worst was yet to come.
I stood completely still as Master Jake continued to stare me down. It seemed like hours before he finally began speaking again.
"I have been so patient with you, Slave," the words sounded sharp and rehearsed as if he'd said them before. For all I knew, he probably had, "I have been so patient, and how am I repaid?"
I chewed nervously on the inside of my cheek, unsure of wether to answer. Master Jake would not want me to speak out of turn and I was not willing to risk angering him further.
"Do you know how I'm repaid?" he repeated, but before I could even think of a reply, he answered himself, "I am repaid with your disrespect!"
I flinched at the harshness of his voice, but stayed silent, holding his gaze.
"Do not look me in the eyes," Master Jake seemed to be finding more ways to be angry with me, but I obeyed and remained silent.
"I don't know what to do with you, Slave," Master Jake began pacing in front of me once again, his tone was thoughtful yet menacing.
"Perhaps I should lock you away, would that work?" he stopped, facing me. I continued to stare at the ground.
"Or maybe," he stepped closer, "maybe I should kill you right here."
The blood drained from my face at his words and I momentarily forgot how to breath. As if he had no idea of my reaction, Master Jake continued.
"I could kill you right here, right now," he boasted, "You wouldn't even have time to scream, let alone try to run away."
He took another step closer, "I wonder if you'd try and fight. You come off as a fighter to me, but you'd know better than to try, wouldn't you?"
My heart was beating loudly in my ears and I wondered if he could hear it. Chances are he probably could as most vampires were able to hear a heart beat from miles away, but I still wondered if it was as loud to him as it was to me. I hoped not.
When Master Jake spoke again, his voice was barely above a whisper. He brought his lips to my ear, "Let's find out shall we?"
That's when I slapped him.
Before I could even think about what was going on, Master Jake had grabbed my wrist and slammed it against the wall.
"How DARE you!" his composure was gone and his grip was tightening by the second.
"I- I do not know what came over me," I scrambled for an excuse, "It was a mistake!"
"Shut up!" Master Jake yelled, slamming my wrist against the wall again before throwing me to the ground.
I looked up at him as he towered over me, "I should kill you right now."
My breath caught at the sheer lack of emotion in his voice. I was going to die. All I could hope for was that my death be a fast one.
Master Jake continued, "I would kill you, but I much rather watch you suffer instead."
* * *
Master Jake's words echoed through my mind as I willed myself to fall asleep.
My tears had stopped hours ago, but I was still shaken up by the ordeal. All I knew was that I couldn't risk seeing Master Jake for the next few days. It seemed petty and cowardly to hide from him, but it was the only thing I could think to do. I already knew Master Jake was capable of some terrible things, I did not want to find out what was in store for me.
Lying there, I found myself missing my previous Masters more than ever before. They had prepared me for how to act around normal vampires, but nothing could prepare me for a vampire like Master Jake. Master Jake was evil, there was no doubt in my mind.
I decided then that I was never going to get to sleep, not with my thoughts as loud as they were. Instead, I sat up and walked to the window on the other side of the room.
It was a small window, hardly larger than a book, but it was big enough. I looked out towards the horizon just as the sun started to rise. It was quite poetic, I thought, how the sun brought a new day filled with light and promise. Looking at it, I could almost pretend the events of last night had not occurred. That it was all a dream that I had only just now awoken from.
"Angel?" Harmony's voice, startled me, "What are you doing?"
"Nothing," I replied, "I was having trouble sleeping."
Harmony tilted her head to one side, but did not question me further, "Oh, well we should probably start getting breakfast ready for Jake. He'll be up soon."
"Harmony," I asked hesitantly. I did not wish to lie to her, but I could not risk seeing Master Jake, "I am feeling a little under the weather today. Is it okay if I rest until tomorrow?"
It was a poor excuse and I could see that Harmony did not believe me, but she agreed anyway.
Sighing, she said, "Okay, I'll tell Jake your sick, but he won't be happy about it."
I nodded, "It means so much to me."
Harmony turned to leave, but thought better of it and turned back to face me, "What's all this about, Angel?"
I was hoping she wouldn't ask me that. I did not wish to explain to everyone that I was hiding from Master Jake, nor did I wish to explain why. I had known it was an inevitable question, but I had hoped to avoid having to answer for as long as I could possibly manage. Unfortunately, I was not so lucky.
"I will explain everything to you later," I promised, "But I have not slept and I would like to sleep now if that is okay."
Harmony seemed confused, but refrained from asking anything further and left.
I watched until the door had closed behind her and returned to my bed. I truly was tired and I needed to sleep. After staying up the entire night, I finally felt I could close my eyes and fall asleep without my thoughts keeping me awake. The last thing I heard before sleep had taken me away was the distant sound of Master Jake's voice, repeating again and again.
'...I much rather watch you suffer instead'
