Chasing Pavement

Chapter One:

[Introductions]

“Baby, I like it the way you move on the floor, baby I like it, why don’t you show me some more…”  twenty-five minutes. I groaned.

I’d been waiting for my sister, for what seemed like hours.

Lara, my sister, was at her friends house and called me when she said there was some drinking, and partying too much at her house. So Lara being mature and all, wanted a designated driver. Funny thing. I can’t legally drive. No license, just a permit.

If she doesn’t get out here in five seconds I’m going in to get her.

I checked the dash, 3:18 a.m. Dad would be waking up any minute now, to get ready for work. Shit. I texted Lara one more time, this would be the eighth time, since I got her text, twenty-five minutes ago.

Lara, I’m still waiting outside. I’m coming in if you’re not out in five minutes.

-Soph.

I looked at everything in the car, nervousness, setting in. I was trying to pass the time. It was my mom’s Lexus I was driving, and I was already nervous about that. 3:19 a.m. I looked at the envelope on mom’s seat it was from the university Lara was trying to get into next fall.

There were a pair of high heeled shoes in the back seat, and a shopping bag from Macy’s. Nothing really out of the ordinary in mom’s car. In dad's though, you might find duck tape, ropes, bags, blankets, and first-aid supplies, but that’s because he’s a construction worker.

3:22 a.m. still no text from Lara. I officially was becoming eager to get home. Dad definitely would see the Lexus gone. And that, will end my life. I got out of the car, locked the doors, and headed to Andrea’s party. I knocked twice before Andrea opened the door, she looked at me confused. She wasn’t drunk at all.

“Hey Soph. What’s up?” she asked. She was in her pj’s with her golden locks in curlers. She obviously wasn’t having a party, a slumber party, well maybe. DeeAnne, Lara’s other friend appeared in the doorway. Same ensemble.

I looked confused I bet. “Is Lara here?” I asked.

DeeAnne and Andrea looked at each other. “No… she never came over?” DeeAnne responded.

My heart thudded loudly in my chest.

I swear the entire universe could hear it. “Do you know where she is?!” I squandered.

“No, she left school in a hurry.” Andrea said, suspiciously.

“Soph, is something wrong? Its 3:30 in the morning, and you can’t drive. So what’s wrong?” Andrea wondered.

“Lara, texted me saying you were having a party and she got drunk and needed a ride…” I trailed off. Now that I think about it, the text, wasn’t in ‘Lara lingo’.

Andrea invited me inside. “A party here?”

I looked around, her house was huge, but no bottles of beer, or wine, or whisky, and no drugs or boys, just her and DeeAnne.

“I guess not.” I replied.

“Look Sophia. Lara’s been acting weird lately. She’s not hung out with us since like September. We rarely talk. But, I think you should try calling her. See where she is? Caz, obviously she’s not herself right now. Lara wouldn’t go to a party and get high or drunk.”

“Can I call here?” I asked.

Andrea smiled, “Of course you can.” I dialed her number.

Ring. Ring. Ring. Ring. Ring.

“Hi! You’ve reached Lara Williams cell, leave a message and I’ll try to get back to you!”

Beep!

“Hey Lara. It’s me, Sophia. I’m at Andrea’s and there isn’t a party, and your not here. Where are you? I’m worried. Call me. Bye.”

Andrea bit her finger nails, and DeeAnne looked at me concerned.

“She hasn’t texted me since 2 a.m. She wouldn’t do this.” I sighed.

“Should we call the cops?” DeeAnne asked Andrea.

Andrea shrugged, “I mean,I don’t know what to do.”

I sighed, “Look, I’ll just go home. She probably got your name mixed up with someone else, and is just past out and hung over. She’ll be home in the morning I bet.” I smiled at them.

That accusation seemed pretty valid. It made me feel relieved.

“Do you want me to drive you home?” DeeAnne offered.

“No, its okay. But, uh, I better go.”

I walked towards the huge, oak door.

“Call me when she gets home?” Andrea asked, concerned.

“Of course.” I smiled, heading out to the Lexus.

“Drive safe!” DeeAnne urged.

“Will do.” I replied, whisking away into the night.

~

Where the hell are you Lara?

This is not good, not good at all. I drove, a cop car came into view, but I acted natural and just kept driving.Thankfully he turned in the opposite direction.

Shit, Lara you are so paying for this.

I figured I should probably text her and let her know, I could pick her up when I woke up, or she could get a ride.

Lara, I don’t know where you are. You aren’t at Andrea McArthur’s house, so I’m guessing you got the names mixed up. I can pick you up in the morning, or you can find a ride home. But, its too risky for me to come looking anymore tonight. Be safe.

Love, Sophia. <3

I pulled into my driveway. Thankfully, mom and dad were still both asleep. I laid in bed, until I drifted into a restful nights sleep.
