I took the egg into the bathroom to study it better. Once I was sat in the water I held the egg in my hands. Half of it was in the water while the other half was not. I studied the intricate design on the outside before I realized I had seen it when I was younger. My father had brought one home one summer when I was about 5 or 6.
"What is it daddy?" I asked with all my curious being seeing as I was sick at the time.
"Well it's an egg." He simply said.
I looked at him as though I was asking if he was serious. He simply smiled at me with a small laugh.
"It comes from the mermaids. If you open it above water-" He opened it to reveal a shrill screech sound. "-it doesn't sound very well. Although if it is opened underwater you can hear the beautiful singing of the mermaids." He explained as he closed it.
"How come it only works under the water?" I horsely asked.
"Because that's where the mermaids live so anything that is of their making only works underwater. The eggs however is the only one of their inventions that still works above water."
"Just not very well though." I said.
"Of course, just not very well." He laughed.
I looked away from the egg to see Moaning Myrtle floating in the water near me. I squealed and jumped back as I wasn't expecting her to be there. She simply looked at me with a slight smile on her face before she giggled. Without a second thought I wrapped my arms around my chest as to hide it the best I could which made her laugh harder. She laughed a little too hard making her sound psychotic.
"What do you want Myrtle?" I asked a bit too harshly.
"Ooh, you don't have to be so mean about it. I just saw you staring at that egg and I wanted to see what it was. Why were you staring at it for so long?" She shot back.
"I-I was just remembering something, that's all." I stated.
In order to stop my conversation with her quickly I ducked into the water with the egg. Once I was submerged I reached up and twisted the button on the top to open it. The egg opened to allow the sweetest sound I'd ever heard escape, the singing of mermaids. The song was a clue to the next contest, that much I knew. I listened close to the words of the song to hear the clue.
'Come seek us where our voices sound,
We cannot sing above the ground,
And while you're searching, ponder this:
What we've taken you'll sorely miss,
An hour long you'll have to look,
And to recover what we took.
But past an hour - the prospect's black
Too late, it's gone, it won't come back.'I rose from the water to find Myrtle with amused shock on her face. She giggled at me then bit her lip. I simply shook my head then politely asked her to go away which she obliged to. Once she was gone I stood from the tub and dried myself off then proceeded to get dressed to go to bed.Dried off and dressed I headed back to the dorms with the egg. I shook my head around causing my hair to whip around my face while Pansy just so happened to walk in.
"Hey." She said.
"...Hey." I replied hesitantly.
"Do you know who you're going to take to the ball?" She asked.
"Ball? What ball?" I asked confused.
"Oh you don't know? Well guess you'll find out tomorrow. Everyone's having dance lessons rather than class tomorrow." She yawned. "Anyways goodnight." She finished as she crawled into bed.
