"I think that's the last one!"

I looked over to my Mom with a smile, then pointed at another box nestled beside my dresser.

"No such luck, Mom," I said.

My Mom sighed, running a hand through her graying brown hair. She shook her head and let out a chuckle.

"Honestly, Katrina, how much stuff did you pack?"

"Mom, you know I like to go by Kat," I said, giving her a playful glare. "And that box is just some books. I can unpack it myself."

I had just moved back to my hometown, Suburbia, after graduating from university. Unpacking took days and it probably would have taken longer if my Mom hadn't helped so much. I was grateful I had her.

"Alright," Mom agreed. "I'll go so you can get yourself settled."

"Okay. Thanks so much for all the help, Mom."

I pulled her into a tight hug, unable to keep my smile off my face. Honestly, I was just so excited to finally be on my own. Even though Mom was helping pay my bills until I could find a job, I felt like I was completely independent now.

We said our goodbyes and then Mom left me to get settled. I walked out to my living room and sat down on the couch. Yeah, the room looked a little bare in terms of personal decor, but I'd have this place just how I wanted it in no time.

I heard a knock on the door and quickly rose to answer it. However, all my previous excitement was ripped away as soon as I saw who was standing there.

"Hi, Katty! Imagine my surprise when I found out you were my new neighbor!"

It was Sharon Tallany.

Sharon was the biggest gossip seeker, rumor spreader, and a terrible flirt when we were in high school. Fortunately, we had gone to different universities, but when I heard she was also moving back to Suburbia, I was sure I was going to throw up.

"Sharon, hi," I said, plastering on a fake smile. "Sorry I haven't been by to say hello. I've just been so busy getting settled in."

"Well," she started, flipping her, unfortunately, gorgeous red curls over her shoulder. "Be sure to drop by as soon as you can. I'd love to catch up and you can meet my boyfriend, Taylor. We've been living together since university."

"I'll be sure to keep that in mind."

Yeah, right. I'm throwing that thought in the mental trashcan as soon as I close this door.

"Alright. See you later, Katty!"

Sharon gave a perfect smile before she turned and waltzed away. I closed the door and fought the urge to roll my eyes. She was so fake. I hated Sharon and I really hated how she always called me Katty.

Wanting to stop my steadily rising anger, I wandered into the kitchen to make myself something to eat. I hadn't eaten at all today, so that probably wasn't helping my irritability. I glanced out the kitchen window and I could see the old mansion that rested atop the mountain.

My friends and I used to tell ghost stories about that place when we were in elementary school. We would say how it was haunted, that somebody died up there and now their spirit killed anyone foolish enough to explore the mansion.

Thinking about it now, I realized how silly we were being. It was just an old mansion that obviously hadn't had any love in a long time, judging on how decrepit it was.

My curiosity began to grow and soon, got the best of me. I wanted to see what was up there, to see just what secrets it held. It was a house stopped in time, no doubt, and I suddenly wanted to explore every inch of it.

As I ate the sandwich I had made, I began to plan. I'd take a flashlight up there and just look around. That's all I wanted to do. I'd also take my cell phone if something happened to me and some pepper spray. You know, just in case.

I was gonna leave at midnight. I didn't want anyone seeing me go up there. This town was probably still as superstitious as it was when I was a kid. Who knows what everyone would say or do if they saw me going up to the haunted mansion?

I also didn't want Sharon to see me. I didn't know if she had changed at all since high school, but I wasn't about to take that chance.

I finished my sandwich and checked the time.

3:28pm

I sighed softly and walked back into the living room, settling back on the couch. I grabbed the remote and turned the TV on to some trashy reality show. I guess I'll have to wait a while before I can go.
