Chapter 2

I led Edward through the darkness with my arm around his shoulders since I couldn't exactly hold his hand. Well, not without slicing my hand open.

He didn't object to the contact, but boy, he was really tense. I chalked that up to nerves. I mean, I'd be nervous, too, if I had just agreed to leave my house with somebody I didn't really know.

Number 1 on the list: make this guy feel welcome in my home.

We reached my house soon enough and I led Edward through the back door, the same way I had left. I didn't want anyone seeing him and freaking out because, knowing this town, they would.

As I shut the door, I noticed Edward wander forward a little bit. I turned to face him, watching amusedly as he explored my living room. Man, he just had this...air of childlike wonderment to him.

"What do you think?" I asked him with a smile.

I frowned, however, when I saw him flinch at the sound of my voice. I wondered if he was just a naturally jumpy guy or if...if maybe something had happened to make him this way.

Well, I mean, something obviously happened to him. He had scissors for hands. I'd have to ask him about those again once he felt more comfortable in my home.

"I like it," he simply said, those big brown eyes of his meeting mine.

"I'm glad," I smiled at him. "I'm gonna go make up the guest bed for you, so feel free to keep looking around, alright?"

Edward gave a little nod and with that, I walked away, going down the hall and to my spare room, making a quick stop for the bedding along the way. As I started to make the bed, my thoughts began to wander.

I had actually invited this guy to live with me. Not that I was regretting it, but I just couldn't believe I did it. I was actually kind of proud of myself. It wasn't right for him to be all alone when he clearly wanted company. I could see the sadness, the loneliness in his eyes. There was no way I could've left him there.

Then my thoughts turned to my mom. What would she think? She had always been so strict with dating when I was a teenager; how would she react to finding out I'm living with a guy? Knowing her, she'd probably freak and assume I'm sleeping with him. As much as I loved my mom, she could be a little paranoid sometimes.

I decided I'd have to tell her soon. I didn't feel right about keeping secrets from her. I was worried how she would react, though. I decided I'd tell her over the phone before letting her meet Edward in person. I didn't want her to make a big deal and scare him. He seemed jumpy enough.

Just then, I noticed Edward standing in the doorway. My heart skipped a beat; the guy was as quiet as a mouse.

"Oh, Edward!" I gasped, then gave a breathless laugh. "You startled me."

"I'm sorry," he said quietly.

I waved a hand. "Don't worry about it, it's fine," I said, but then frowned when I saw a small trail of blood on his chin. "Oh, it looks like you got cut."

I grabbed a tissue from the box on the nightstand – I had boxes riddled all over the house – and walked over to him, but he flinched as soon as I went to touch him.

"Hey, it's okay," I reassured him in a gentle voice. "I'm just gonna wipe the blood away, alright?"

I waited until I got a response from him before I made a move to touch him again. Edward simply stood there for a moment, but soon, gave a quick nod. I smiled and moved to dab the blood off of his chin. I made sure to keep my movements slow so I wouldn't startle him. Edward just stood stock still, letting me wipe away the blood.

It wasn't that big of a cut once you got past the blood, but I couldn't help but feel bad for him. I mean, the guy had scissors for hands and, judging by the scars on his face, accidental cuts happened often.

"It doesn't look too bad," I told him, moving to throw the tissue away. "I think it'll be fine."

I looked back to Edward for a response, but just got a nod. I smiled, amused by his constant silence. I guess he just wasn't much of a talker.

I glanced at the clock and saw it was nearing 2am. When did it get so late? I figured I had better let Edward get some sleep. I was starting to feel sleepy myself.

"Well, it's getting late," I started, clasping my hands in front of me. "I'm gonna head to bed. Is there anything else you need, Edward?"

Just as I expected, he stayed silent and just shook his head. I smiled and wondered if he'd start talking more once he got settled.

"Okay. My room's at the end of the hall, so if you need anything, just ask." I moved to walk past him and noticed how he tensed up as I neared. I hoped he would stop being so fearful soon. "Goodnight, Edward."

  "Goodnight," came his soft reply.

I walked into my bedroom, shutting the door behind me. Once I had changed into my pajamas and gotten into bed, I grabbed my cell phone and sent a quick text to my mom.

Call me in the morning. I need to tell you something important.

I set my phone on my nightstand and snuggled deeper into the covers. As I closed my eyes, I wondered how Edward would adjust here. I also hoped my mom wouldn't freak out too much when I told her about him tomorrow.
