Breakfast with Edward was...an interesting experience to say the least.
I honestly didn't know how the poor guy ever got enough to eat what with scissors for hands. He kept dropping everything and I would've offered to help had he not looked so determined to do it on his own. I didn't want to crush his spirit. Instead, I ate slowly as to give him plenty of time to eat.
Afterwards, I offered to give Edward a proper tour of my home. He accepted, silent as always, and seemed more than happy to follow me around to all the rooms of my house. The thing I loved about Edward was how he always seemed genuinely interested in whatever I had to say, no matter how mundane it was. He made me feel...important, as cheesy as that sounds.
We came back to the living room after our little tour and suddenly, there was a knock on the door. I saw Edward visibly jump and before I knew what I was doing, I had my hand on his arm.
"It's okay, Edward," I said gently. "It's just someone at the door."
I glanced towards the door, wondering who it could be when suddenly, I realized my hand was still on Edward's arm. Quickly, I pulled it back, shuffling awkwardly towards the door.
"Um... I'm just gonna, uh...go see who that is," I said, but my words were more mumbled than anything.
Smooth, Kat. Real smooth.
Fortunately, Edward seemed oblivious to my overwhelming awkwardness. Thank the heavens for small mercies. I went to the window that was right beside the front door and took a peek behind the curtain to see who was outside. I almost had a panic attack on the spot.
It was Sharon Tallany.
Why was she here again? She was just here yesterday. That wasn't the only thing I was worried about, though. My gaze darted over to Edward, who had become preoccupied with examining the small bookcase beside the couch. Edward was still getting used to his new surroundings and Sharon had a tendency to be a bit...abrasive, if I was putting it nicely. If I was putting it harshly... Well...
Let's just say my mother wouldn't approve of my choice of language.
The point is that I didn't want her to overwhelm Edward or...be weird around him. I know she said she had a boyfriend, but based on her reputation from high school, it was probably safe to say she hadn't changed much. And Edward was so innocent and sweet.
Sharon wouldn't respect that. In fact, she'd probably make it her mission to change that.
I was snapped out of my thoughts as Sharon knocked on my door again. Jumping into action, I rushed over to Edward, doing my best to keep my voice soft. Even though I was freaking out inside, I didn't want to startle him.
"You just stay here while I answer the door. I'll only be a minute," I said to him. "Okay?"
Edward only nodded in response. I gave him a smile before I went to the door and opened it. As quickly as I could, I slipped outside and shut the door behind me, hoping Sharon hadn't caught sight of Edward.
"Hi, Sharon," I greeted her pleasantly. I put on a smile, trying my best to cover up my nervousness. "What brings you to my doorstep again so soon?"
"You've been holed up in your house all morning, Katty," Sharon giggled, flashing a perfectly white smile. "I woulda thought you'd be out, enjoying being back home."
I chuckled nervously, rubbing the back of my neck. "Yeah, well, uh... I've been busy getting unpacked and...stuff..."
Sharon raised an eyebrow and I knew immediately from the glint in her eyes that she suspected something was up with me.
Why did my face have to give everything away that I was feeling?
"Why, Katrina! Are you hiding something in that house of yours?" Sharon cooed at me.
"No," I said and immediately cringed at how fast I said it.
Sharon giggled again and oh, how I felt like throwing up. She was eyeing me up and down like I had just spilled my biggest secret to her and I was left feeling more than slightly confused.
"Have you told your mother?" She asked.
I blinked. "Told her...what?"
"Duh! That you're living with a guy!" She exclaimed, looking at me like I was stupid.
My heart stopped.
How did she...?
Had she seen Edward?
No, there was no way...
"Um... How did you come to that conclusion...?" I asked slowly.
"Oh, please!" Sharon waved a hand at me, showing off her perfect nails. "I've lied to my mother about living with guys enough times to recognize the signs."
"Oh," I said. I honestly didn't know what else to say to that.
"So, who is he? Where'd you meet?" Sharon asked eagerly. "You can tell me, Katty! We were great friends in high school."
Ha! Maybe in your mind.
I knew there was no way I was telling her about Edward. She was not going to turn him into the subject of neighborhood gossip. Me, I couldn't care less about, but I wouldn't let her do that to Edward.
"Um..." I started, sort of making up my excuse as I went along. "I don't really want to say anything right now. He's kind of...shy."
"Aw, what a sweetie." Sharon smiled and gave me a pat on the shoulder. "Well, I hope he loosens up soon so I can meet him. In the meantime, you be sure to give him a warm welcome for me, alright?"
I forced a smile. "Sure thing, Sharon. I'll see you later."
"Bye, Katty!" Sharon smiled another perfect smile before she turned, tossing her red curls over her shoulder, and sauntered down my sidewalk.
I let out a sigh, glad that was over and done with. Just as I was about to go back inside, however, I was stopped as Sharon called my name once more.
"Oh, and Katty? Good luck!" She gave me wink before continuing on her way.
Well, now I definitely felt like throwing up.
