After what felt like an eternity of waiting, the clock finally struck midnight and I could go explore that old mansion.

I had dressed a bit warmer since it could get chilly at nights, so I was wearing a nice hoodie. I had my little flashlight in one pocket and my pepper spray in the other. I grabbed my cell phone from the couch and tucked it into the pocket of my jeans. I threw my blonde hair into a ponytail and I was ready to go.

I slipped out the back door of my house and began the trek up to the mountain. I had plenty of light, due to the almost full moon in the sky. I reached the path that led up to the house and didn't even falter. I made my way up the winding path and before I knew it, I was already at the mansion.

I squeezed through the narrow gap in the front gates. They were so old, I wasn't even sure they would move if I tried.

The front garden was gorgeous. There were so many topiary sculptures, and in such good condition, I was sure somebody had to be keeping them up regularly. The thought that somebody might be at the mansion made me a little wary, but I quickly brushed it off. This place had been abandoned for years. It was probably somebody from town, keeping up a strange hobby.

I walked through the front garden and up to the front door, pushing it open with some effort. It was heavier than it looked. I pulled out my flashlight and clicked it on as I walked into the main area, marveling at the stone architecture. What really caught my eye, though, were all the old machines throughout the room.

They looked very old, probably abandoned along with the whole mansion, judging by the cobwebs and thick dust covering them. I walked up to one, one that looked like a long conveyor belt. I ran my finger through the dust, creating a track through it.

I was just about to examine more of the machines when I heard a sound. It was soft, faint, and I couldn't quite make out what it was, but it made me freeze. Somebody was in here with me.

I quickly fished my pepper spray out of my pocket, having it at the ready just in case. Cautiously, I inched my way toward the front door, trying to be as quiet as possible. I was almost there when I heard a voice.

  "Don't go..."

I froze. The voice belonged to a man, definitely, but it was soft, almost scared. Slowly, I turned around. There was indeed a man standing there in the shadows, just beyond the reach of the moonlight.

"I'm not trespassing, am I?" I suddenly blurted out.

I hated that I blurted out things when I was nervous. It was like instead of actually throwing up, I just had word vomit.

Ew. Mark that on the list of mental images to erase.

"No," the man replied, his voice as soft as ever.

I slowly placed my pepper spray back in my pocket. I was still on edge, but this guy sounded genuinely gentle. I didn't feel like I was in any danger. Or maybe I was being too naive and this was how I was going to die.

After a moment of silence, I spoke up again, wringing my hands together.

"Um... Can you step forward into the light? So I can see you better?" I asked timidly.

Wordlessly, the man stepped forward into the moonlight streaming through the windows. I couldn't help but let out a soft gasp. He was tall, but not much taller than me, and slim. His face was pale and covered in scars and his brown eyes looked very sad. His hair was black and stuck up all over the place. The guy looked like he hadn't seen a hairbrush in years. He was wearing a strange outfit that was covered in buckles and straps. It looked like it was made out of leather.

But what really got my attention were the many sharp looking scissor blades where his hands should have been. That made me a little scared.

"I...I don't want to be rude, but, um...what's with your hands?" I asked quietly.

The man held up his hands, but didn't step any closer.

"I'm not finished," he said.

I nodded, even though I didn't know what he meant, but didn't know if he could see it. As he lowered his hands, it occurred to me that I wasn't being fair, that I should be standing in the light so he could see me as well.

I stepped forward, even though I was still nervous. The man's eyes widened when he saw me, a look of recognition flashing through his eyes.

"Kim...?" He whispered.

"I-I'm sorry, but...I'm not Kim," I said, having no idea who this 'Kim' was. "My name's Katrina, but please, call me Kat."

The man was silent for a moment, as if absorbing this new information. He gave a little nod and I wasn't sure if it was to me or to himself.

"Um... What's your name? I asked.

"Edward," he replied softly.

"Edward..." I said, just testing out the name. I smiled a little. "That's a nice name."

Edward didn't move, but I thought I saw the startings of a smile.

"Thank you," he said.

Huh. Man of few words.

I didn't even notice how much more comfortable I was with him suddenly. He was just so...innocent and pure. I felt completely at ease with him, once I got past the initial shock of his weird...scissor hands, I guess.

I suddenly realized how late it must have been. I checked my phone and it was late.

"Oh, shoot, it's getting late. I've gotta get going," I said, putting my phone back in my pocket.

I looked up at Edward and he merely nodded, but the look in his eyes was making my heart break. Out of nowhere, I thought, I couldn't just leave him here all by himself. Who knows how long he's been here already? The guy desperately needs a friend.

"Hey," I started, softly. "Why don't you come home with me? You look like you could use the company. Plus, I've got a spare room you can have all to yourself."

Edward seemed to hesitate at my words, but I could see the longing in his eyes.

"Are you sure?" He asked timidly, his hesitance winning over.

"Positive," I said, giving him a reassuring smile.

He seemed to think it over for a minute or 2, but then he nodded. I smiled, excited this odd man was going to come home with me.

As I started to lead him back to my house, I had a million questions for him running through my head. I held them back, though. My questions could wait.

  Well, at least until tomorrow.
