The clouds were still that dull grey that I had known all my life. My deep sigh carried across the field as I made my way to school. The ground beneth me crunched in a steady patteren. The frozen frost that covered all the ground as far as any could see was still there. Even though the sun had not yet risen I knew what lay ahead after having made this journey nearly everyday of my life.
Crunch, crunch, crunch. My footsteps carried on. In my heart I wished that something unexpected would happen but deep down I knew that today would be the same as always. Dull, grey and boring.
Crunch, crunch ... Squlech ... There was an erie silence of nothing after that disterbing noise. I stepped forward. Crunch. I stepped back. That horrible sound of steping on something wet repeated itself. How odd. The morning itself seemed to hold it's breath with me. My eyes, having long been adjusted to the constant darkness, dared to look at the ground beneth me.
I almost fainted at the sight before me. At first I thought it was simply the remains of a wolfs breakfast which usally consisted of a lone sheep. However there before me were not the remains of a sheep. No, it was the remains of something all to familar.
My brother had said early this morning that he was going after that 'bloody' wolf. I told him to leave it but he said we couldn't afford to lose anymore sheep with dad close to his death. I tried to stop him, I told him to leave it to the town hunters but he said that they weren't trying hard enough just because we are the poorest in the village. It us true we don't have enouh money for the most basic things or the important things like dads medicen...
Chace, my brother, had left that morning wearing his lucky overalls, black with a green checkered patten. I now looked down at the blood soaked overall in front of me. The lushus green that had greeted me this morning was now a few centimeters away from my reaching hand. It's bright colour stood out but not all of it could be seen since a dark merky colour covered some of it.
My brain confirmed my fears yet I still refused to believe that something terrible had happened unexpectedly. Despite the merky substance I craddled the torn overall as I uncovered what layed beneth. Meat. I am sure it was meat. Thats what it was chewed up, it just had to be meat!
A White shone through that looked pure but had a hiden sin. It was bone. I picked up what I thought was the end of it to find something tap my shoulder at the same time. I felt a resemblance of fingers, a grip that felt familar. I breathed out a sigh of relif as I turned around expecting to see Chase giving me a reasurring smile. Nothing. Just the fields carrying on. No one was there. So where was the hand, the reasurence that I was sure of.
Looking at my right shoulder I saw half chewed meat. No. Not just meat. Fingers. With no skin. I tried to scream but terror took my voice before it had the chance to escape. Numbness took my body before I could move. Some strenght in me made my eyes travel down to follow where the half fingers had come from. Chunks were missing here and there. No blood was flowing any longer but I could see the blood drying and forming clots. Keeping my breakfast down I reached the end of what I was looking for. It was connected to the thing I had picked up. No. Not connected. It was what I had picked up.
There was bone at the other end that was bent so that it looked like the bone that connects the two parts of arm together. It was called the elbow. I think. The arm flinched. That's when the pericing sound broke loose. It carried on untill I was back in the 'safety' of my home. My throat felt as if knives had been scrapped down it. The pain was unimaginable but it was nothing compared to what I felt on the inside.
Chace. No. He is ... I mean was .... My brother... What had happened? Why did it all feel familar? Was ... he ... Dead ?
