My phone buzzed with a new text in the middle of the night. Hmm, I wonder who that could be?

Derek: Hey Ry, turns out Avery and I are gonna come over tomorrow to find out if you made it or not. Your brother texted me so don't ask. Hope you guys do get in though. Show Brett that he's messing with the wrong bitch ;)

Me: Gee thanks for calling me a bitch, whore! And thanks, I hope so too. Night xx

I put my phone back on my night stand and fell asleep.

...

The next day after school

We finally got out of class and I met with Scott and Bobby at my locker. I grabbed my stuff then headed out the door. We met Derek and Avery at my house because Derek drives his car everywhere unlike us.

When we got to my house we saw Derek and a girl I'm guessing to be Avery standing in the garage with my brother.

We set our boards aside along with our bags and sat on the couch with My brother. He was holding the envelope that held our place in the competition.

"Are you ready to open it?" Chris asked.

I nodded and grabbed the envelope. I looked at Bobby's face then I looked at Scott's. They both had a nervous look, as did I.

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. Tore open the envelope which revealed the letter that had a seal on it. The seal meant we got in but we needed to know the color. Bronze meant third, silver meant second, gold meant first and black means you made it to top twenty but didn't make first top three.

I opened up the letter while covering up the seal. I was too afraid to see what color we had gotten. If we had gotten black then I would have just pulled out of the competition right away.

Chris put his hands on my shoulder. "I believe in you." he said with a smile.

I lifted my hand slowly revealing a shiny silver seal. Second place, we made second place. I was astonished.

I read the letter and saw the list of ranks. It started of naming bands who got the black seal. Then it went to the too three ranks. 'Brett and the Maines' were placed in third.

"Looks like Brett has a bad start compared to us." Scott smirked. Even though they are related, they have never acted like brothers.

"Yeah third sucks." Bobby said. Don't get me wrong, I guess third place is fine because you at placed but it usually means you were close to not placing at all. Starting off at third means that you start off with a rep that states that you are gonna lose. I sort of feel bad for them. Okay never mind feelings gone.

"Now that the tension is over I'll introduce my baby sister." he said with a smile.

"I'm not a baby Derek!" she argued.

"So you're Avery? I'm Riley." I said handing her a can of coke. She grabbed the drink and sat back down on the couch.

She wasn't at all what I had expected. Sure she looked a little more girly than me but she didn't act like it at all. In fact, she acted more like me. In my opinion, she wasn't that bad at all. Nothing like those slutty, rich cheerleading snobs.

"You should hang with us sometime. Maybe even listen to our band live." I said.

"Maybe" she said sipping her drink.

...

An hour later, Derek and Avery left with Scott and Bobby because they were too lazy to skate back home even though they lived two minutes away from here. That just goes to she how lazy they are 24/7.
