We play by the lake on a cold winter day.
I suggest we try to skate on the surface.
My friend goes first, and crashes through the ice.
I look down into the hole, searching in the darkness.
Seconds pass, and I hear no sound.
I take my skates off, and dive in after her.
The water is cold against my skin, and I quickly swim through.
I see her sinking down below me, and I go down to get her.
When I finally manage to grab her underwater,
I swim back to the surface.
It never occurred to me how fast the thick ice could freeze over.
