Colette knocked on the door of the bed and breakfast she had just seen as she was driving by. She hoped that the owner would answer the door shortly, because it was pouring rain. Finally, the door opened, revealing a middle aged woman in her pajamas, who had undoubtedly been asleep moments before. Just like Colette, to ruin things for people. Again.

“Hi,” Colette said, smiling, “I know it’s late, but do you have a room open for me? I’ve been driving all day.”

“Sure, no problem.” The woman moved aside so Colette could bring herself and her dripping wet things into the house.

“This is a really nice house,” Colette commented.

“Yeah, my dad’s family was really rich, so when my grandmother died, Dad and I moved in here,” she explained. “When Dad died last spring, I decided to turn the place into a bed and breakfast, since it’s an awfully big house for just me. I never married, so I just stayed with Dad and took care of him as his health worsened.”

“I’m sorry for your life.”

“Thanks. You can have the first room on the right when you go up the stairs over there.”

“Mucho gracias,” Colette thanked her, taking herself and her wet things to the room that the woman had referred to.

It was a nice room, with a cream colored wallpaper that had tiny flowers scattered on it, and a big bed. Colette was too tired to enjoy the simple pleasures of the room, however. She dropped her suitcases and flopped onto the bed, falling asleep instantly without a single thought in her mind.

Well, except one. That one was constant.

It was the thought of Christian.
