Chapter 2
Ok maybe I was wrong, this day really is going to be bad. Serenity thought grimly as she and her father pulled into Monte Cristo High's parking lot. This was going to be Serenity's first time at public school and she was very much dreading it. "I don't feel so well" she grumbled in her unusually sweet voice as her and her father got out of the car. "What was that sweetly?" "huh..oh,oh nothing dad" she managed to quickly mutter and forced a smile on her small pink lips to reassure him. She knew that her going to high school was important to her father, probably more important for him then her.
Her dad was being pressured more and more at work and his bosses needed more and more of his time, so she knew if she attended school her father wouldn't feel like he was letting her down. Serenity's father then offered her his hand and pulled her out of the car, he then grabbed her book bag and put his arm around her shoulder and together they walked to the school's entrance.
The two were met immediately by a short, plump man with a big smile and eyes that shone with laughter and kindness. "Welcome Mr. and Miss Tsukiakari!" the little man exclaimed with a huge grin. "It is such a pleasure to finally meet you! I was a little worried you had perhaps lost your way but I see I had nothing to worry about" the strange man said. Serenity shyly hid behind her father but she had a feeling in the end she might end up liking this eccentric man.
"My name is Rufus Humorits, I'm the Vice Principal here at Monte Cristo High". Serenity thought his last name suited him perfectly, considering he seemed like a man who was always up for a laugh. "It's wonderful to meet you Mr. Humorits, thank-you for such a warm welcome" Serenity's father said taking the anniciotive by extending his hand for a handshake. Mr. Humorits took it with a laugh and said "Oh please call me Rufus, no reason to be so formal I like to think of our students and their parents as family" the plump little man remarked. Mr. Tsukiakari smiled and agreed full heartily.
Finally the vice principal seemed to notice Serenity who had been timidly hiding from view. "Ah and this little angel I presume is our newest addition to the school?" he asked while trying to make eye contact with her. Serenity's father then stepped out of the way and gently pushed her forward. "Yes, this is Serenity, my daughter, this is her first time at public school so she's abit shy" Mr. Tsukiakari said with a mix of fatherly pride and a smirk on his face. Mr. Humo-uh Rufus watched as his newest student blushed and averted her eyes while murmuring something un comprehensible.
Oh great I haven't even known him for 5 minutes and he probably thinks I'm weird, why must I be so shy? Serenity thought to herself and lowered her head in shame. Mr. Rufus simply smiled wider and his eyes softened as he tried addressing the adorably timid girl before him. "Please do not worry my dear, everyone here is going to do their very best to make you feel right at home" Mr. Rufus said and he took up Serenity's delicate hand and locked his pinky with her's."Promise" he said with kind smile. Serenity looked up with big golden eyes and looked him right in the eye for the first time.
She studied his round face for a short moment and decided he was telling her the truth. She timidly let a small smile cross her unblemished face. "Thank-you v-very much Mr. Rufus, that m-means alot" Serenity slightly stammered with a small tint of pink on her cheeks. Mr. Rufus was a bit taken aback at how fluid and sweet her voice was, but so far everything about her had been sweet.
Mr. Rufus looked down at the bashful girl and his eyes softened in a fatherly way, but there was a small hint of worriment hidden in his eyes. Mr. Tsukiakari caught the look and realized both men had thought the same thing. How was this gorgeous, timid girl going to manage the social, mental stress and pressures of high school? Their train of thought was broken when a man came up behind Mr. Rufus hidden in the shadows and called to him.
"Mr. Humorits, has the new student arrived yet?" the voice inquired. The plump little man gave a startled leap in the air, and quickly dabbed his eyebrows with a handkerchief. "Oh, Mr. Tarak you gave us a fright!" exclaimed Mr. Rufus. While Mr. Humorits had jumped, Serenity had let out a small squeak of startlement, and her father slightly gasped. The owner of the voice let out a husky, good-natured chuckle. "My apologies, I did not mean to startle our new arrival.
The man stepped out of the shadows and came into view. The man was a rather tall, burly man, with silver hair who looked to be only several years older then Serenity's father. Serenity stared in awe of this new stranger, and quickly assumed her original place behind her father. "Oh dear, I think I may have scared my new student, my sincerest apologies miss" the man said directing his attention to Serenity.
His dark, piercing eyes looked at her blushing form with genuine regret, but also a bit of curiosity and amusement at just how jumpy and easily frightened she was. "No harm done I'm sure Principal Tarak" Mr. Rufus interjected with a small chuckle. This is the Principal!? he looks like he should be in Olympic swimming or something Serenity thought in awe. "Yes, no harm done, Serenity is just a tad skiddish considering its her first time in public school" Serenity's father replied taking on the role of a father again.
Principal Tarak's eyes who had not left Serenity's small form then shifted over to her father's, and he smiled pleasantly. "Thank-goodness, I would hate to find that not even 10 minutes into the tour our new student is already wanting to leave" the newest man said as he returned his gaze to his newest school addition. Serenity had thus far collected her barrings and had realized that this man was no threat. She looked up to meet the intimidating gaze and yet again found herself blushing.
Principal Tarak simply smiled and continued staring upon the darling little female that stood blushing before him. He soon broke the awkward silence by saying "I hope that the young miss does not think unkindly of our school because of my actions" Serenity's new principal said. He spoke with such melancholy in his voice that Serenity could not help feeling guilty and ashamed. Principal looked down again at the small girl with fake pleading eyes, and he knew that the girl had found the fake emotion to be real because of the way she seemed to panic.
Serenity quickly realized she had made this man, her new principal at that, think that she was some prissy, cowardly little girl and she felt even worse. She hated seeing people sad, and she panicked when she realized that she was the one causing his sadness under false pretences. Serenity then quickly decided to try and comfort him and tell him the truth. "Oh n-noo! I-I don't think b-badly of the school at a-all, quite the opposite a-actually" Serenity stuttered out for the second time that day. She had become completely flustered and tripped over every thought, whether it was the man's presence or her nerves that was causing her scatter-brainedness, she did not know.
Her eyes were filled with panic and regret, she could only hope her stutterings had convinced her new principal. While Serenity was having her panic attack, the three adults were finding it hard not to laugh, and scoop up the poor flustered girl in a comforting hug. Both Vice Principal, and Principal found it especially difficult not to smother their new student because they were still very unused to her angelic voice that sang with distress and that made them feel guilty for no particular reason at all.
The poor dear gave herself an unnecessary panic attack Principal Tarak thought to himself with an inward smirk. Meanwhile, Serenity had finished her mumbling, and stood fidgeting under the three elders gazes. She watched Mr. Tarak break into a heart felt smile and she immediately sighed in relief. At least they don't think I'm a snob she thought to herself, it wasn't the most comforting thought but it was enough to bring a small smile to her lips taking everyone by surprise. "Well, I don't know about all of you but I could stand around all day and chat, but I'm sure you'll be wanting that tour soon miss Tsukiakari" Mr. Rufus said.
Serenity looked over at the grinning men and her nervousness rushed back to her. "Um, y-yes I suppose s-so" she replied with a small tinge of green on her face. Luckily for her, her father noticed her distress and asked if the two gentleman didn't mind if he tagged along. Both agreed full heatedly, and the tour of Serenity's new school began...along with an unexpected adventure.
