Is It Worth It?

Dustie

I stood in front of my full length mirror, looking at myself one last time before Calum came to pick me up. I was wearing a dark skull pattern dress, leather jacket and combat boots. It was cute, but I just hoped I wasn't too dressed up for this date. I mean he said it was kind of fancy, but I mean this was Calum.

I heard a knock on the door and I ran to answer it before anyone else in my family could. I opened the door and saw Calum standing there, his eyes lit up when he saw me. He was wearing a dark grey shirt, leather jacket and black jeans. He smiled at me and looked me up and down.

"You look great." He said.

"Thanks, so do you."

"Thanks," He said turning red and looking down.

I yelled that we were leaving and my parents yelled back an "okay". We walked out to his car and got in. He backed out of the driveway and he still hadn't said where we were going.

"So where are we going?" I asked.

"It's a surprise."

I rolled my eyes and just smiled. It was so sweet of him to surprise me like this. As much as I really wanted to know, I was excited that he cared enough to surprise me.

We pulled into the parking lot of a place that I didn't really recognize at first. It was a restaurant and it looked cute, I just didn't know how I had never noticed it before. Calum got out and opened my door for me and helped me out of the car. We walked up to the restaurant hand in hand and I was smiling like some stupid little school girl.

"So you like pizza right?" He asked me.

"Um yeah, who doesn't?"

"Good, because this is the best pizza place in town."

"Really? How have I never heard of this place before?" I asked.

"Guess you don't get out enough." He shrugged.

I just gave him a stupid grin and he laughed. We went inside the restaurant and they took us to a booth and we sat down. We ordered pizza and Coke and they brought our drinks out to us first.

"So when are you going to come to one of our shows?" Calum asked.

"I don't know. When is your next one?"

"This weekend. We're playing at some cafe place."

"Oh cool. I'll try to be there, I'm sure Riley will let me know about it."

"She and Michael have been pretty friendly lately. Still haven't made it official yet?"

I shook my head. "No, and I don't when or if they will. Riley doesn't like labels, especially this early. I just hope she doesn't miss out."

"Miss out on what?" He asked.

"About a year ago Riley was cheated on by a boy that was kind of like Micheal and now she's a little scared that it'll happen again and that's why she's having such a hard time with commitment."

"Well Michael isn't like that. He would never hurt her like that, he's a good guy."

"Yeah, I know and so does Riley, she's still scared. It was really hard on her."

"Michael will take care of her, don't worry. Oh look, pizza is here." He said looking up. The waiter sat the pizza down in front of us and we both dove in. It was probably the best pizza I had ever tasted. I had like four pieces and could've eaten more, but I didn't wanna act like a total pig in front of Calum.

When we finished eating, we walked back out to the car and got in. Calum started driving and I had no idea where we were going.

"Are you going to tell me where we're going?" I asked.

"Nope." He said with a grin on his face.

"Didn't think so." I said.

"You'll like it though." He said.

We drove to the park and got out. I wasn't sure what was so special about the park, I mean it was pretty but I was kind of thinking of something a little better than the park. Calum opened the door for me and grabbed my hand, leading me to the walkway that whined it's way all through the park.

"Where are we going?" I asked.

"You'll see, just wait." He said. He couldn't stop smiling the whole time and I kept wondering what in the world was going on.

"Okay, we're almost there. Close your eyes." He said.

"What? No I'm not doing that."

"Dustie, please just do it." He said.

"Okay, fine." I said.

I closed my eyes and he led me down the walkway. I wasn't sure how far we had walked, but just a few minutes later he told me to open my eyes and when I did, my breath was taken away.

In front of me was the Light Bridge. It was a bridge that was covered in Christmas lights and it stayed lit up all year. I had always wanted to come see it and I had no idea how Calum knew that.

"Oh my gosh Cal, it's beautiful." I said.

"Come on, let's get a closer look." He said, taking my hand again.

He led me up to the bridge and we both leaned on the railing and looked at the water down below. The light was reflecting off of the water and this night literally couldn't get any more perfect.

I looked up at Calum, who was already looking at me. He smiled and we both leaned into each other and our lips met. The kiss was slow, but it still ended before I wanted it to. He put his arm around me and I leaned on him. I smiled, I didn't think that I could any happier than I was at that moment.

But just like all good things, it had to come to an end. We walked back to the car hand in hand. It felt so good outside and I didn't want to leave.

"Tonight was amazing, Cal. Thank you." I said.

"Well I'm glad you liked it." He said, smiling. "Could we talk for a minute?" He asked.

"Yeah, sure." I said. We sat down on a bench and he bit his lip. He looked a little worried and I felt like this wasn't going to be good.

"Cal, what's going on?" I asked.

"The band got a record deal."

"Oh my gosh that's awesome!" I said excitedly.

"Yeah it's great, but there's one problem. We have to move to London."

And that's when my perfect night ended. The smile faded from my face and was now replaced with an expression of confusion and sadness. How could this happen? We were just starting to get to know each other.

"Really? Well when do you leave?" I asked.

"We have four weeks before we have to be there. So we have at least that much time to spend together."

"Yeah, at least we have that." I said.

We left the park and he dropped me off at home. He walked me to the door and kissed me before I went inside. I walked up to my room, changed into shorts and tshirt and just sat on my bed.

Was it really worth it? I mean was it worth it to give your heart to someone who was just going to leave in four weeks and you may never see again? Those were the questions swirling in my head as I drifted off to sleep.
