The three kits woke up in a cave full of moss and feathers. A cat had curled up beside them and wrapped her tail around them.
"Good morning." They recognised the Feathercloud's soft purr.
"Good morning Feathercloud." Hazel, Willow and Dandelion chorused. They could smell the fresh scent of fresh kill from outside the den. The warrior chuckled as the three kits tumbled out of the den and towards the pile.
"I think they should get their clan names." The clan leader, Leafstar, mewed to Feathercloud. The three had only been in the camp for a day but they were classing Feathercloud as their mother. Feathercloud was sweet and kind and took them in when they had needed family the most. Her mate, Stonefire, on the other hand, was nasty to them and snarled whenever he spoke.
As the kits had finished the rabbit they were sharing, Leafstar jumped onto the high ledge and called: "All cats old enough to catch prey, gather beneath the high ledge!"
Feathercloud nosed them towards the crowd of cats. She sat with them and listened to what the leader was saying.
"Today, three kits will be receiving their clan names." Leafstar mewed. "Hazel, Willow and Dandelion, please join me on the high ledge." The kits looked around and then at Feathercloud. The she-cat nodded. Reluctantly, the kits climbed onto the high ledge.
"Hazel, you have reached the age of 6 moons and have settled in well, from this day forward you will be known as Hazelpaw. Your mentor will be Dawnspirit, I expect that she pass on everything she knows. Dawnspirit, you have received excellent training from Wintercloud, you will mentor Hazelpaw. Good luck." Leafstar mewed and Dawnspirit touched noses with Hazelpaw.
"Willow, you have reached the age of 6 moons and have settled into our clan well, you will be known as Willowpaw and your mentor will be Rabbitleap. Rabbitleap, I expect that you will pass on everthing you know onto Willowpaw."
"Dandelion, you have reached the age of 6 moons and are getting on well in the clan, Softfeather has told me that you have chosen the path of a medicine cat. Softfeather will mentor you, at half-moon you will be accepted as an apprentice at the moon cave. Softfeather, I expect that you pass down every thing you know onto this apprentice."
"Hazelpaw, Willowpaw, Dandelionpaw, Hazelpaw, Willowpaw, Dandelionpaw." The clan chanted.
"You three will hold you vigil tonight." Leafstar said, jumping down from the high ledge.
Late that night, as the three new apprentices sat at the camp entrance, Feathercloud came and placed a rabbit in front of them.
"Eat up and remember, when you are sitting your vigil, you are not allowed to talk or sleep. Good luck my kits, good night." She mewed, nuzzling them.
"Good night ...mother." they whispered.
