The next day, Kayson arrived at his school with a cup of coffee that was made by his younger sisters. Since it was the week after the students took final exams, everyone was recieving their grades from all of their first three classes before lunch.
And of course...
"98%, 98%, 100%. Damn, Kayson!" Barack growled, shaking his head and looking up at Kayson as him, Aahdi, and the large crowd of students inside of the hallway walked to lunch. "Do you ever fail anything?"
"Hard work pays off." Kayson grinned, placing his hands into his pockets. "That's what my dad always told me."
While preparing to walk in the door, Kayson winded up running into Madilyn again.
"Oh hey!" Kayson smiled. "I remember you from yesterday."
"Hey Kayson!" Madilyn smiled, waving a little hard.
Madilyn glanced inside of the lunchroom, placing her hands into her pocket as well.
"Um.........did you want to eat with me?"
"Well I was actually going to eat in the lunchroom with my friends." Kayson chuckled, pointing his thumb at the cafeteria.
"Oh.."
"Did you want to eat in there with us?"
Madilyn glanced back out at the hall, then turned back to Kayson.
"Actually, I have to finish one of my incomplete exams." Madilyn chuckled. "Sorry."
"Oh no it's alright." Kayson shrugged. "I'll be in here if you're trying to sit somewhere."
"Okay." Madilyn smiled. "Bye!"
"See ya."
But Madilyn was lying. She didn't have a test to take. She just didn't want to eat in the living room. Why? Because she didn't want to be judged. Even though nobody would say anything, their eye contact said it all. The way that the vast majority of the Indian kids would look at her for being an American was pretty telling. She felt judged since she didn't have ties to being an Indian.
But her adoptive mother, was an Indian herself.
While Kayson was at school across the country, Isaiah was picking Kayson's little brothers up from school with Stephanie. As they were preparing to pass the rehabilitation home, Isaiah's little boys said something that they always did.
"Daddy, can we see mom?" Maurice and Jalen chanted.
"Y'all ask that every time we pass the home." Isaiah groaned. "I told y'all that momma ain't doin' too well."
The boys slumped in their seats, glancing down at the floor in a bummed tone.
"We never get to see momma..." Jalen mumbled.
Isaiah felt bad because he never did let them see Tyler. He sighed, making a U-Turn between someone's garage.
"Aight, y'all. We can go see her." Isaiah sighed. "But it's only for 10 minutes-"
"YAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYY!" The boys cheered.
Stephanie smiled back at the boys, then glanced up at Isaiah.
"They can visit her a little bit more, Isaiah." Stephanie groaned. "I mean, she is their mom."
"Really, Stephanie?" Isaiah growled, turning to her. "Because it's fucking okay to see their mother wildin' out because she can't stop her damn heroin usage?"
