I press my lips against Ryan's. And she easily gives in. She's mad at me,and I know she is. But, first we have to talk about my parents. I place my hand on her stomach and slowly pull away from her. I rest my forehead against hers.
"We need to talk". I whisper.
"Yeah, I know". She doesn't meet my eyes. She just grabs my hand and pulls me to her bed. I follow. I sit on the edge and she sits beside me.
"When I got home the other day dad smacked me and said he wouldn't have girls who fondle with other girls live under his roof. I got smart and told him it wasn't under his roof. Mrs. Bowe didn't even tell my parents about what happened with Mr. Cline. Dad found out when I told him..." I drift off. "Also, about that". I turn and look her in the eyes. "Ryan, he came onto me. He said he wouldn't tell my parents if I did something for him. He then unbuttoned his pants. And that's when Mrs. Bowe walked in. That's all that happened". She looks at me.
"I believe you". She cups my cheek and lightly kisses me. "So do your parents know you're here?" She asks.
"No. Tonight's moms drink night. Kaylee is over at the neighbors. And dad is working late. So. They wont notice I'm gone, just like they haven't noticed me on the weekends any other time". Ryan lays down and I lay down beside her. "Hold me?" I ask.
"Come here baby" she says. I crawl into her arms and that's where I fall asleep.
I wake up to a banging sound. And then yelling.
"Where is she? I know she's here!" My dad. Oh shit. I quietly climb out of Ryan's bed and she comes running into her room.
"You have to sneak out the window. Once you get out there just go through the back and I'll meet you. I'll drive you home". I pull my hoodie and shoes on and open Ryan's window as she leaves her room.
"Where the fuck is she Ryan?! Are you hiding her?" He yells.
"Mr. Stone, Lindsey isn't in my house. I can promise you that." I hear Ryan's voice. And I quietly climb over the gate and wait on the curb. Soon enough Ryan's car appears. I slide in the passenger seat. As Ryan parks at the corner next to my house I look at her. "I'm so sorry Linds. I'm sorry you have a shitty family. I promise I will get an apartment soon, and you can come live with me".
I just look at her. "I can't live with you Ryan...." She looks hurt.
"Why not?...." She looks me in the eyes.
"What about Kaylee? When I leave who do you think they will turn to? I can't leave her. I can't just walk out knowing how when my dad gets drunk he gets abusive. And how when mom gets mad she finds ways to get dad to hit me. I can't leave Kaylee there knowing what they will do to her...." As I say this tears stream down my cheeks. "I love you Ryan, but that's my baby sister and I would die for her before I ever let anyone lay a hand on her". I open the car door and walk the rest of the way home. I don't sneak in my window like I had planned. No, instead I walk in the front door. As soon as I shut the door I'm being pushed up against it.
"Where the fuck were you?!" I try to squirm away from him but he just presses me against the door harder.
I look him in the eyes. The eyes of a man I've become to hate. The man that use to spoil me. The man who began drinking when he realized mom was cheating on him. The man I use to look up to. "Tell me why the fuck it matters? Why have you changed? Remember when I was a little kid? You never hit on me then, and the only time you cared when I went somewhere was if it wasn't the next door neighbors house. Tell me dad, why the fuck you all of a sudden come banging on doors looking for me?". His face falls and for a second I think he regrets ever laying a hand on me. Then mom walks in the room.
"Are you going to let her talk to you like that?" That fucking bitch. Dad doesn't waste his time knocking my feet from under me. He then kicks me in the ribs. I scream and I hear a crack. He gets on his knees and pulls me up close to him by the collar of my shirt. He slams my body against the hardwood floor of the living room. I bang my head and instantly my hands go to my face as he starts to repeatedly punch me. After a few minutes he stops and gets up and leaves. I curl into a ball and cry. If I leave this will all fall upon Kaylee. I cant let this go on any longer. I place my arm across my ribs and slowly get up. I keep my cries to a minimum. I slowly open the front door, each step sending shear pains through my ribs. I walk next door and before I reach the handle the door opens and out comes Sam. He looks at me with concern. He helps me inside and I tell him everything. After I spill my guts, he pulls out his phone and calls the police.
