**Chapter 1: An Intro to A Messy Life
"August 5, 2011"
It stresses me out just looking at the date. It's been more than a month since classes ended and I haven't done a single thing besides help my parents with their business affairs. Gosh, I miss Dana. She's the only one who understands all the things happening in this house. She's lucky. She got out of it, chasing liberty in a city far from our parents' torture. I just wish she'd taken me with her. I'm her little sister any-
*Beep!
"Sarah, darling, we need you to wear the purple Fendi dress and the Steve Madden purple stilettos Uncle Frank bought you the other day. Stella's coming in a minute to fix you up. Be down at the ballroom in an hour."
That was just my step-mom from the intercom. Always busy to come talk to me herself. Rubbing my eyes, I sit up on my bed. I slowly walk to my dressing room.
I wonder what Dana's doing. I'm sure she doesn't have to wear such uncomfortable-
*Beep! What now?!
"On second thought, put on the cyan Burberry Prorsum tube- and of course the same shoes. Thank you."
Staring at all the clothes in this enormous dresser, I shake my head.
How am I gonna find those in here? There are so many clothes in this dresser. I don't know why my parents insist on buying new clothes every 2 weeks when I practically have a whole store in here.
Still, Stella says I'm lucky. Other girls don't have this much. I agree with her, not every girl in my school shops for clothes as often as I do.
Hmm, maybe I could give away those I don't-
*Ring!
I pace to the door and quickly open it. Stella stands there like a statue, smiling like she always does since the day she got hired.
"Miss Sarah, let's get you dressed. Shall we?"
I nod. I don't have much choice anyways.
My parents are rich- filthy rich. Alicia's my step-mom. She's not really a fashion designer, but she's the one who manages the presentation on clothes designed by Light Revolve™. She sometimes gives the presentation herself. You don't know how much they would pay her to talk- sometimes I think of her as a critique. My dad, on the other hand, is a lawyer. They don't argue a lot, but Alicia ends up getting what she wants all the time- for the wrong reasons.
"Miss, what do you think?" Stella snapped me out of trance. I look at the mirror and got quite impressed. The makeup was light- just the way I like it. And my hair doesn't look like a wild animal from the zoo like how my previous helper did it. I thank her with a smile.
The intercom beeps again. Alicia asks us to go down. Dinner was about to start.
Arriving at the ballroom, I realize that it wasn't a private dinner. All of the employees of Light Revolve™ in our city must be here. My mother pulls me aside and asks me to walk with her.
"I need you to meet somebody." She says. I shudder at the thought I might be meeting another guy modeling for Light Revolve™.
"Sarah, this is Paul Johnson. He models for the company."
I knew it! I smile politely as he takes my hand and kisses it lightly. I'm so sick of my step-mom finding a "suitable" boyfriend for me! This guy is a model- sure. But he can be stupid or, most likely, conceited. Alicia leaves us alone to "talk among ourselves".
"What a fine house you have here." He starts, looking directly into my eyes.
"Thank you. I expect your house wouldn't be so bad too." I say, tucking my hair behind my ears.
"Why don't we sit over there, by the mini bar and talk about how grand your place is, aye?" Seriously, this is the type she wants me to be with?! But a part of me asks to give him a chance.
After sitting there and talking about nonsense for more almost an hour, I decided to go to bed early. I bid farewell to the handsome dummy in front of me. As I walk through the big doors of the ballroom, I see my dad on the far end of the hallway out in the balcony- staring at the sky. I watch myself approach him- I know what the problem is.
"Dad, you okay?" I ask worriedly. He'll probably say yes, but at least he knows I'm concerned. After a few seconds of silence, I ask. "Is it Dana?"
My dad pulls me in for a hug. "Sarah, you girls know I love you, right?" The same words he asked us when the incident happened.
"Of course, dad." I reassure him.
"I know your mom can be tough on you sometimes, but she loves you too. Can you at least forgive her for that night?" I hear him start to choke on his words. He begins to sob. I hug him tighter, not knowing what to answer.
My dad and I didn't get to say a lot of words to each other. He knows it'll only make me cry- and I know it'll upset him more. After a few minutes comforting my dad, I really needed to lie down or something.
Now on my bed, I stare at the ceiling above me.
The incident. I can't ever forget that. It had been 3 years since my real mom died. A year and a half after that, Alicia was welcomed into our home, taking her place as our new mother. At first, it wasn't really a problem to me. She was nice to us, and I admired her for her intelligence- I still do.
But my sister was unconvinced. Her exact words were, "She's a troll. She pretends to be nice, but I know she's just acting like that so we won't hate her!" I can still hear her say those words. A small smile starts to invade my mouth as I remember my sister-
Then I thought about the words that follow her statement. She was right.
