**Chapter 2: Bright Ideas
August 6, 2011
I look at my phone to see what time it is- “8:10 am”, it reads. Funny, I don’t remember sleeping at all last night. I walk over the mirror on the far end of the room. For a few seconds, I stare at the figure in front of me. I glare at the image- my eye bags seemed to have grown bigger the past days, my red hair looked so dry and for a short moment, I started to think my blue eyes were losing their hue. I look exhausted!
I analyze the pictures scattered along the sides of the mirror. I look to the biggest one at the top right corner. Dana...gosh, I miss her. My attention quickly turned to the other person in the photo besides Dana and me.
Scott...
My eyes began to tear up. I wipe them dry with the back of my hand. I take a deep breath and let it out. I dismiss the sad memory from my thoughts before I start to really cry. Back to Dana...
It’s been a while since I’ve talked to her in person. I want to call her, but Alicia would know. Plus, I don’t know what time it is at Dana’s place now. Hmm, I think I really should talk to her- tell her about dad.
I hold the number for speed dial. After a few seconds, I hear a soft “Hey, Sarah. Listen, I’m kinda getting late for work. Do you mind if we talk later?”
“Oh, ok. What time can I call you again?” My voice was hoarse. I bite my lower lip, unsure if she would give me a pleasant reply.
“I’ll call you, okay? Whatever it is you gotta tell me, just- save it for later. I really have to go now. Bye.” I miss hearing that voice. It’s been almost 5 months since the last time I’ve seen her in person.
She was always yapping about freedom and that someday she would have a house far away from this place. Who knew she actually meant it? Well, now, she is free-
*Ring!
I hear the swiping of a card, so I didn’t bother to get up and open the door. Alicia’s head popped into view.
“Well, what do you think of Paul?” she asked, grinning from ear to ear. She was practically shaking with excitement.
I bob my head to the side. “He’s good-looking, alright. But, I don’t think I'd want to see him again.” I crunched my eyebrows.
She nods and slowly turns toward the door. Before getting out, she says I have to get to the family dining room in 20 minutes- with or without changing clothes. Her tone had changed. I knew she was upset.
Down at the dining room, there were fettuccini, lobster, crocché, and some other stuff I don’t know how to name. I sit across my father. He actually looks happy- I wonder what happened? He looked so glum last night. I look to my left- I hate looking at this empty seat.
“Sarah-” Alicia said, breaking the silence. “We’re going on a vacation- a family vacation to Barcelona. We have 4 tickets, but since I don’t think you’d want to see Paul again, we would rather take Stella with us.” A smile forms on my face as I watch Stella take her place on the empty seat on my left.
After a few seconds of staring, smiling, and silence, “Well, what do you think?” Alicia asks, with wide eyes.
That’s weird! She never asks me for my confirmation when it comes to visiting places. My smile grew bigger, telling her I like the plan. We talk about how we would spend the remaining summer time going sightseeing and visiting trademarks and just about anything that would take our minds off of Camrose.
After filling myself with whatever could fit in my stomach, Stella accompanies me to my room. While walking through the halls, a thought came to mind- If Dana was still here, she would have been coming to Barcelona with us. Hmm, Dana...what about Scott? Again, I stop myself before I begin to tear up.
"Stella, are you married?" I ask, seemingly startling the person walking beside me.
"Yes, Miss. Why do you ask?" She slows down her walking and stares at me with big eyes. Her mouth is open, but nothing else comes out. I know this face- she thinks she's in trouble.
"Don't you want to take your husband with you to Barcelona?" I ask, brushing my hair with my fingers.
Her eyes grew bigger. Her lips started quivering. I could tell she didn't know how to answer.
"Stella, it's Barcelona. I think it's more appropriate for couples to go there. I'll tell Alicia I'm staying here and you could take your husband with you. 'That sound good?" I'm feeling good about my plan.
Of course she tried to talk me out of it, but I won't let an "I don't think that would be a good idea, Miss," get in the way of spending my summer the way I want it.
For the first time in weeks, I'm actually excited to come see Alicia in her room. I know I could just use the intercom, but I couldn't control my feet! Before I knew it, I was in front of her room.
Ringing her doorbell, I hear her say the door's open. I come in and see her staring at some clothes she'd lain down on her bed. She turns her head towards me and gives me a warm smile. She asks if I had any questions about our vacation.
My excitement started to drain, being replaced with anxiety. I fiddle with my fingers, shaking nervously. Alicia raises her eyebrows at me.
Better say it now, or forever hold your peace. "I think- hmm, I think Stella should take her husband with her to Barcelona." I say uneasily.
She turns her attention back to the clothes. "Then she should. But she has to buy him his own ticket."
"What I mean is, I- I won't be- coming." I bite my lower lip. I could feel the temperature of my face begin to rise. I must look so red right now!
"You- you can't be serious. You have to come. Your father and I planned this as a family vacation." A heavy sigh escapes her mouth. She puts one hand on her waist and one on her forehead. "Why do you want to stay here?"
I scratch my head. Clearly, I didn't think much about this. Hmm...okay, I've thought of something. But she probably won't like it. "I just don't think I'm ready yet to go on a family vacation without Dana. I'm sorry, mother. Maybe next year." I reply, giving emphasis on the 'mother'.
Her eyes widened, with one eyebrow raised. Yup, she didn't like it. She clears her bed and sits down. Patting on the free space on her right, she signals me to sit down beside her.
"I'm sorry." Her voice soft and shaking. "I know it must be hard on you. After what happened to Scott, and Dana running away. I'm sorry. I shouldn't be rushing you." She hugs me tight.
For the second time today, tears start to flow. Despite my best efforts to prevent them from coming out, I begin to cry. I inhale deeply and again wipe my tears away.
"You need a vacation. I'll be here when you get back. I won't go anywhere, I promise." I tell her in an assertive tone.
She finally agrees to my staying here. As I walk back to my room, I can't help but feel guilty about lying to Alicia.
My words echo in my ears,
I won't go anywhere, I promise.
