THIS IS FOR YOU, LILLY!!!
Lilly slung the gun over her shoulder and looked over to Glenn. "Well? You coming?"
Glenn grabbed the empty backpack. "Yeah. Where exactly are we going?"
Lilly rolled her eyes as they started to walk. "We've been over this a million times."
Glenn grinned boyishly, and Lilly ignored him trying to be cute. "We're going to the old supermarket on 25th Street. Jaxon said they have lots of supplies, and there aren't many people there."
"Why is it just the two of us? I don't trust us out alone."
She sighed. "Glenn, you don't have to always protect me. Trust me, I know how to kill a biter. I'll be fine."
Glenn was uncertain. "Okay... But if you die, I have every right to say 'I told you so'."
"Deal."
The couple walked until they reached the store, which was only about a quarter of a mile from the camp, but they were both sweating by the time they could see the building.
"It's a hundred degrees out here!" Lilly complained, wiping perspiration off her forehead.
"Let's just get in, get what we need, and get out."
Lilly nodded. They both had two backpacks, plus pants and shirts with several pockets. They were going to grab whatever they could.
Lilly did a quick scan of the area--nothing harmful in sight-- and pushed open the door to the grocery store. It was unlocked. She grinned. "See, Glenn? It's our lucky day."
"Yeah, yeah." The two walked inside and started to scan the shelves. "What all do we need?" Glenn shoved a can in his backpack.
"Medicine, diapers, food, clothes. Same thing we always do."
He walked over to the pharmacy section and grabbed asprin. "Not much of this left anymore." He grabbed as much medicine as he could find, then started to search for food.
"Weird to think we'll have a baby soon, huh?"
"Yeah. I'm just glad it's not ours. I just couldn't bear it if something happened to it."
"Hey." Lilly turned to face Glenn, and stared at him from a few yards away. "That is our baby. Everyone in that camp-- they're our family now. If that baby dies, then that means our baby died."
Glenn nodded, and they stood there in awkward silence. His girlfriend began to search for supplies again, and he started to do the same.
Lilly fumed internally. She had made it clear when they joined the camp that they had to protect each other. It was like everything she said went through one of Glenn's ears and out the other.
As she cursed him without saying a word, Glenn screamed. "Lilly! Behind you!"
Lilly pulled out her knife and spun around, to find a biter walking toward her. She slashed its head, and more came from the shadows.
"Grab your bags and run!" Lilly shoved a few remaining items into the sack and started to sprint toward the door. But, Glenn was not so fortunate. The bag had caught on something, and he struggled to pull it away as the biters came closer. "Just leave it!" Lilly yelled, and Glenn started to run toward her. But, a biter grabbed his ankle and pulled him down. Glenn slashed wildly with his knife, but a biter still managed to close its teeth around his calf.
"No!" Lilly screamed, burning with hot rage. She ran to him, against her better judgement. He had already been bitten. There was nothing to do. Yet, she ran to him, and began stabbing the biters around him, tears blurring her vision.
"Li-Li-Lilly... Run!" Glenn sputtered, but Lilly refused.
"No! I am not going to let you die!" With every syllable, she brought down another biter,
"I'm bitten! Just go. I'm done for."
"No, you're not!" She was screaming too loud, and she knew it. She was going to attract every biter in a fifty-mile radius if she didn't quiet down, but she couldn't.
Glenn screamed as another biter tore into his arm. She killed it immedietly, then pulled out her gun and started shooting.
"Lilly- stop. You're-you're just.. Attracting more." Glenn's face was white from blood loss, and the fever was already kicking in.
"I won't leave you here." She knew she had to leave. She knew she was being irrational. There were just too many of them. But she couldn't leave. She refused to accept that the one person she loved could die, just like that. It wasn't fair. She would do anything for him, and here he was dying.
She brought down two more.
"Just go!" Glenn screamed, with the last of his energy. A pool of blood surrounded him, and he gave a choked cry. "I'm already- ready-- already dead. Just go. Just shoot me and go."
"No," she whispered, tears running down her cheeks. "No."
She was surrounded. She couldn't leave now, even if she wanted to. Glenn seemed to realize that, and his eyes grew large.
"Just run. Just push through and run."
It wouldn't work. They encircled her, preparing to bring her down, clawing at her. Another reached Glenn, and bit his stomach, tearing away the flesh.
"Glenn!" Lilly screamed, but it was too late. He was already gone.
She fought through the tears. She forced her heart to harden, forced herself to survive. She killed the biter that attacked Glenn, and she realized she had to make sure Glenn didn't turn. She couldn't make herself do it. She couldn't stab him-- that was out of the question. She couldn't point a gun to his head, either.
"Harden your heart, Lilly," she thought, and, with shaky palms, she raised the gun and pointed it at Glenn's head.
"Goodbye, Glenn." She squeezed her eyes shut and pulled the trigger. The bullet hit its mark, and that was it. That was the end of Glenn.
That was also the end of Lilly. A biter behind her clamped its jaw down on her shoulder, and she fell to the ground, unable to scream.
She knew that she'd die here. Next to Glenn.
The biters fell on top of her, and pain surged through her body. She bled from practically everywhere, and she could barely move. But she couldn't turn into one of them-- no, she wouldn't.
She raised the gun and pointed it to her temple. "You told me so," she muttered, and then pulled the trigger.
