Chapter 5-Refusal

My first lesson, away from Rose's friends and sitting next to Miss Chat-A-Lot, i.e. Jessica Stanley, passed relatively slowly, and we were, unfortunately, told that we had to write an essay on the first act of Shakespeare's 'Twelfth Night'. It could have been worse, I supposed, but I wasn't particularly looking forward to writing a whole essay for homework.

Equally, listening to Tanya and Lauren discuss their plans for various boys for this upcoming Christmas dance was utterly sickening. I had a rather vile and vivid mental picture of the outfit Tanya would wear to 'seduce' Edward, as did I consequently know all about Lauren's dress ideas for the dance.

Ugh.

My morning became even better - note the sarcasm - when I sat down in trig. At least I was sitting next to Rose, and near Jasper, but I was doing ridiculous math problems! It was an impossible task for somebody such as myself. Thankfully, Rose was relatively good at math, and helped me along. She advised me to seek help from Emmett - I suspected that I'd be taking her up on that.

We left the classroom when the bell rang, and I followed Rose and Jasper into the lunch hall... Where a fight appeared to have broken out in the middle of two tables. I spotted James in the midst of it all as I looked between the throng of people, and noticed, with a slight smile to myself, that whomever he was fighting had given him a bloody nose.

"Who's he fighting?" I asked Rose, whispering in her ear.

"I'm not sure," she said. "Alec, perhaps."

"Who?"

"Alec. He and James are 'friends'. They assist each other in beating up other people, and then decide to beat up each other every few months for a bit of variation."

I snorted to myself. How very male. I spotted Alice a few metres to our left, and waved to her. She danced over to us, looking chipper and cheery as usual, and suggested that we sit down and try to ignore the fight. We agreed with her, and made our way over to a table.

"Do they have a motive for fighting?" I asked Alice, after she had confirmed that it was Alec that James was fighting.

"Probably not," Alice replied. "They don't usually."

Edward and Emmett made their way over a few minutes later, and rolled their eyes in synch when they saw James and Alec fighting... The sight was actually a but sad. Clearly they spent far, far too much time with one another. As Emmett sat down, Jasper and Alice went off into their own little world, and Emmett placed a not-so-chaste kiss on Rose's lips. It was a little disturbing. I dreaded to think of what my mother would say if she saw Rose now. She'd be utterly horrified. And my father... I didn't even want to think about it.

"Nauseating, isn't it?" Edward asked, smiling at me. Oh my... "I'm glad I don't have to suffer alone anymore. It became incredibly uncomfortable, particularly during sleepovers when the folks were out."

I shuddered.

"Trust me, my mother wouldn't let a teenage couple stay in her house without her watching their every move."

Edward raised an eyebrow at me.

"Don't look at me like that," I muttered.

Edward chuckled at my response, and I felt my heart thud once, twice as hard and loud as it normally did. Surely I wasn't turning into one of those pathetic teenage girls that swooned over guys when they laughed, was I? But then again, I'd rather do that than be somebody like my mother - a 'real' Swan.

"Sorry," Edward said, still laughing a bit. "I can't really imagine your life. Then again, I'm sure you can't imagine mine either. Excuse me." Edward leant over me and whacked Emmett's head with his fork. Emmett and Rose broke apart, and both glared at him. Rose stood up and held her hand out to her boyfriend, before heading out of the canteen. I swore I heard her mutter 'party-pooper', but I wasn't sure.
