When I awoke, I groaned because I could hear voices. Dang people waking me up. It was Saturday. SATURDAY! I get to sleep, but no, my mother had to invite some friends of hers.

Speaking of the devil, she very loudly woke me up.

"Avery! Get down here! Your brother and father are here!"

Shit. I forgot about that little detail.

My mother and father are divorced, but it didn't rip our family apart. Every once in a while, my father and my step-brother would come visit us. Jonah- who was only 11, normally stayed half the year. Half the year with us, half the year with our father. And this year, he would be staying the whole time.

I quickly stepped out from my bed and threw a burgundy-red sweater on with black tights and ran down the stairs.

"Jonah!" I yelped. He looked up and when he saw me, he started to run towards me. When we met, we were enveloped in a hug.

"Hey," He said calmly.

"Hey. You ready to live a year with us nerds?" I said, gesturing to me and my mother.

"Duh. I'm so ready for this!" He exclaimed.

"A WHOLE YEAR!"

"A WHOLE YEAR!"

I grinned and he followed my grin, and then we started laughing. My mother and father were talking to each other as if they were good friends who haven't seen each other in a while. Because they were good friends who haven't seen each other in a while. Literally.

I went outside to help haul Jonah's stuff inside. The whole time, I felt like I was being watched. It was just a feeling. That kind of feeling. You know, when you know someone's watching you. I decided to stay quiet about it. I heaved a large suitcase full of some of his stuff into the doorway.

"Jonah! What is this?!" I yelped from the living room.

"Whatsit look like?!" He yelped back.

"Black suitcase, with a photo on it with a girl!" I responded. "Wait, WHAT?!" My eyes suddenly focused on the girl in the photo who was smiling prettily. She was a real cutie. Looked like a doll. She had pretty nice freckles, nice skin, neatly parted hair, pretty hair at that, and her eyes were a glossy pale blue. I just stared at it until Jonah came down.

"Ah! That's none of your business!" He yelped. I chuckled as he swiped the photo away from my grasp.

"Don't worry. I won't ask you about it until you're ready." I smiled. He nodded and blushed. Then he ran up to his new room.

Debating on if I should go out or not, I walked up to my room to take a look in my closet. My eyes scanned for a better outfit, and I immediately eyed one. It had overalls, kinda more like a suspender short overall, matched with a gray beanie. I put on some deep red eyeshadow, and a thick winged eye and some black tights. Then, I put on multiple bracelets.

I scanned the room for my phone and spotted it on my table. I picked it up and put it in the back pocket of my overalls.

"I'm going to the park!" I yelped towards my mom, in which she replied 'OKAY!'.

I grabbed the book I was reading, Miss Peregrines Home For Peculiar Children, and marched out the house. I took a quiet way to the park, going to the one about 4 or 5 blocks away. A couple minutes later, it was visible in the distance. I quickened my pace and ran over to a bench. I sat down, eyeing the children playing on the play-ground and smiled. I opened to my most recent page and read.

We walked through the woods in a comfortable silence. When we came to the bog, she said , "Step only where I step," and I did, planting my feet in her prints. Bog gases flared up in green pyres in the distance, as if in sympathy of Emma's light.

I kept on reading like this for a while. The silence enveloped me, and I soon was just reading the book. About 2 or 3 hours later, I was almost done.

"Left-more left- not that much!"
And like that we slowly made our way toward land, the fog pursuing us always, its long gra-

RING! RING!

What the fuck? Almost done with this godforsaken book, which I have gotten so sucked into, and some person manages to fuck it all up. Seriously, one more goddamned minute.

RING! RING!

I groaned and picked it up, answering the call not even knowing who it was.

"Hello?" I practically yelped.

"Hello, sweetie." An unfimiliar and creepy voice greeted me. I glanced at my screen. Unknown number.

"Who the hell are you?" I spat.

"You'll find out soon enough." He hung up. Then, someone hit me with a rock and I fainted.
