"Me? How?" I asked and looked over at Sam, who started to giggle. I crossed my arms and glared at her, "What's so funny?"
Sam pointed at me, still giggling, "You said meow."
Wow, real mature...
"Grow up." I said, arms still crossed in front of me.
"Aaaw, is the widdle kitty gwumpy?"
Letting out a snort, I took my pillow and threw it to her face with all the force I had, but she caught it.
"Ha! You have to throw better than that to-" Barely finishing, my bedroom door opened and my mom's face appeared.
"Sorry girls, can I come in?" She asked quietly, opening the door a little wider.
"Yeah, sure" I nodded.
My mom smiled, then turned to Sam, "On the other hand, you guys look busy. I could still come back later to talk with Zoey, if that's okay. You don't want to listen to my boring conversations with my daughter, right Sam?"
Sam shook her head, "No, I don't mind. Go ahead Mrs. Reed."
My mom nodded, then turned to me and took a seat on my bed. "Right, here we go." She took a deep breath before continuing. "As you know Zoey, I've told you a lot that I'm extremely bored of permanently sitting at home, doing nothing while you're at school and your father's at work. I can't take the quietness and this isolation anymore, so I decided to get a job."
I nodded slowly, indicating that she should continue.
She smiled, "So I listened around and finally got one. It's a nice job and we know the people I work with. It's a family business and they work from home, so I'll be there a lot. They don't live that far from us as a matter of fact, so you can come visit now and then. Oh, by the way, they have a girl that used to be in your class."
Who would that be?
I nodded, genuinely happy for her, "That's awesome. When do you start?"
"Tomorrow" she said enthusiastically, making me almost choke on nothing.
"Woah, that's quick!" I managed to choke out.
"Yes, I know honey, but the sooner I start, the sooner I'll be cured from this constant boredom. Hey, why don't the two of you come with me, then you can catch up with your old friend."
Sam immediately looked for an excuse. See, the two of us weren't keen on catching up with old friends. There was always that uncomfortable awkwardness that came along with it.
Sam let out a slight cough. "I actually have other plans, but thanks anyway Mrs. R."
"Okay then, but you'll come, right Zoey? I told her you would and she was so excited." my mom pushed on.
I looked at Sam, then looked back at my mom again, "sure" I shrugged.
I mean, how hard can it be to catch up with an ' old friend'?

My mom knocked on the door to her so-called co-worker's strangely decorated house. I took the time we waited to observe our surroundings.
Green, chipped paint covered the walls of the one story house and the hand-made garden decorations were a bit overwhelming. Large walls hid the house from anyone walking past it on the sidewalk.
Looking to my left, I saw a big inflatable pool standing in the front yard and right next to it stood an old, beat up car.
