"Oh God! Derrick! Why are you here?" Maia shouted angrily. "Well I couldn't leave you alone." "Derrick, I'm fine!" She waited a little until she calmed down and finally spoke. "Look Derrick, Vince told me to come here alone, I just don't understand why you needed to come. This will only make things more suspicious." "How will it make things more suspicious?" Maia looked at him as if he were born yesterday. "Oh I don't know," she sarcastically responded, "Canadian criminal runs away with Canadian boy. Oh look, now it's not just one run away in the states they have to look for, it's two!" "Okay, chill!" she looked at Derrick and took a few deep breaths.
Maia trudged to the medicine cabinet and immediately started rummaging through it. "Ughh, where is it?" She flipped every bottle and read the labels. One by one the containers fell to the ground until Derrick ultimately said, "What are you looking for?" "ADVIL! So I can make it through the night. How am I supposed to sleep knowing all of this and then the cops could be looking for me, or us? And everything is just so stressful and..." Derrick clasped her shoulders and gave her a light jolt. "Maia, Maia...You need to relax." She took her third deep breath and she still couldn't relax. She lied and said she had, but it was so incredibly hard to.
Derrick pointed at the bottom left corner in the cabinet and reached for the blue and white medicine bottle. He opened it and removed two orange tablets. He strolled over to the refrigerator and filled the glass cup to the brim. Carefully, Derrick retraced his steps to Maia and instructed her to open her mouth. She did so and Derrick plopped the pill in her mouth and comforted her as she sipped the ice cold water. Her throat was freezing, but she loved it. It's just how she did it back in Canada. No matter if she was on the verge of getting hypothermia, Maia insisted on drinking only the coldest of waters.
"Better?" Derrick asked. "Yeah...thanks." she replied. As Maia continued drinking the water, one thing still irritated her. What happened after she passed out? ...or during? She decided to ask Derrick. "Derrick?" "Yeah?" He replied. "Umm...What happened, when I...uh..you know, passed out?" Derrick stood there and stared at Maia uncomfortably. Maia sipped her water slowly and awaited an answer. He didn't murmur a sound for what seemed like minutes, until something finally slipped out, "Maia...you should get some sleep."
She looked at him with a disapproving look. "What?...No! No, Derrick...you have to tell me...I need to know." "Later" was how he responded. Maia was way too tired and way too angry to deal with his crap. "NO DERRICK! You tell me right now!" "Maia, I think you are a little sleep deprived." He said in the most sincere and sinister way.
Maia started shaking. Why had this felt so familliar? She needed to escape... immediately! Maia trudged over to the stairs, but midway she felt weak. She started to grasp onto anything she could feel, her vision started to get blurry, hands started to sweat, and her head started to pound louder and louder each second. As she twisted around to see if Derrick was getting closer to her, she clasped her eyes shut, but when she opened them, he was gone. With her last bit of energy, she turned back and headed up the staircase and there he was... standing tall above her. In a split second she hit the floor and everything went pitch black. The last thing she saw before she collapsed was a dark beige color of Derrick's shoelace.
