As she was strolling around a small city in New York, the mixture of tears and rain water dripped down her face. Maia stared at the rusty stop sign she had passed about ten times after realizing she was walking in a circle. For the past hour she was spending at the corner of the street, one thing kept turning in her mind.
"It was all you! All your fault!" Her sister had not hesitating to throw those words into Maia's face. She launched herself toward her sister and they both came crashing to the floor. She didn't even realize where she was. Who was looking at her. Maia just pulled out Blaire's chocolate brown hair out one by one. and then, it happened. The reason she was here.
A sound awakened her. A snap of branch and a ruffle of a bush was all it took to wake Maia up from her slumber. A voice whispered in her ear, "Are you okay?" She jumped in panic, "What?" The shadow came closer, "I said, are you okay? You're just here, by yourself. Do you need a place?" Her mind went blank. But she did need somewhere other than this crappy street corner. "Sure"
The man pointed at his shimmering silver Volvo and opened the passenger seat door. As Maia climbed into the seat of the car, all the questions came to her. "What if this man is trying to kill me?" " What if he's psycho?" "...What if he knows who I am?" Then she felt as if it was a mistake...even though her whole life was a mistake.
"What's your name?" Now way to many questions were in her head. "Should I use a fake name?" "...Hello?" "Oh, uhh, Maia." Mistake #2 she thought. She couldn't give anymore information. She was no longer Maia Tasmin she was...Maia Smith. Not that she would need to use a last name, but she just had to be prepared for anything . "I'm Caleb"
About 5 long, boring, minutes passed by with no conversation. Maia was about to fall asleep looking at a run down motel with the letters m, t, and e barley glowing, out the window.
"So what was the deal back there? By yourself?" "What's your deal, do you just pick up every girl off the street?" She said in a sarcastic voice. Defensively the handsome stranger replied, "Okay, Okay, I get it, it was stupid of me to ask." There were a few minutes of silence once more. "My parents hate me, so I ran away, end of story." It was half true. He was a stranger, she didn't have to lie to him, but she didn't have to tell him the truth either.
"So have you seen me anywhere? On papers?" She fearfully asked. "No, I just met you, why?" Looking for another answer to yet another lie she quickly responded, "People think I look like this girl on the news." "Which?" How many questions does this guy ask? Maybe he knew her and was trying to get her to crack. Finally she lifted her shoulder to signal him that she didn't know.
They arrived at the house. More like mansion. Her eyes were locked on the two storied, beige, mass building right in front of her.
"Welcome to Mì Casa!" They strolled along the stone brick pathway leading up to the double doors painted maroon. He opened the door and gestured Maia to go ahead. The house was even bigger on the inside. She tip toed across the Black and white tiled floor over to the kitchen. Suddenly five wealthy looking people stood up from a long dining table and stared at the jet black haired girl with the dirty clothes.
"Hi mom, dad. This is Maia, my friend." "Friend?" Maia whispered into his ear. "Yes, friend!" He snapped. She tried not to act bitchy. It would be awkward if Caleb introduced her as 'The girl he picked up on the street'. "Is it okay if she stays here for a while?" "Okay, but she will sleep in the guest room." His mother gave him a look that said 'and you know why!' "Well Maia, this is my mom, Elise, my father, Ansel." The two oldest people sat up from the table. The woman was wearing a U.S.P.A dress with some black leather Marc Jacobs flats. The man wearing a blue collared Hollister shirt, khakis, and slippers.
"My brother and sister, Clayton and Faye." the younger ones stood up as well. The girl a bit younger than the guy, was wearing a royal blue Juicy Couture sweat suit and bare foot, while the boy was wearing an Abercrombie shirt and checkered shorts.
"And finally this is my brothers friend, Derrick." It felt as if Derrick was doing things differently, he stood up a different way, wore different clothes, an American eagle shirt with blue shorts, he seemed familiar. And he stared at Maia, he looked at her differently.
Trying to strike up a conversation, Maia exploded,"So, Caleb's the only one with a normal name?" Maia laughed while everyone stared at her with a confused look on their face. "I'm kidding!" Then her laugh turned more into a nervous laugh. Caleb looked at his family and had a stern look on his face as if to say 'laugh!' Everyone did so, but Derrick had an eerie smile on his face. Very familiar smile. Then he stared at her. A very familiar stare.
A little too familiar...
