A knock came from the thankfully breaking what would soon be an awkward silence. Wiping away my tears and putting on a fake smile I opened the door.
“Hey…Harvey…” I stood confused. “W-what you doing here; I paid the rent.”
He had a sympathetic look that told me that anything he said right now was not gonna be good.
“That’s what I’m here about Envy.” He handed me a letter.
Nervous as shit I slowly opened it and read down through it. My eyes grew as I stared at the paper in hand.
“I-I’m being e-evicted?” I struggled to get my words out; I couldn’t understand this. “H-Harvey? W-what…” I looked up at him. Fuck he was tall, nearly as tall as Andy. Andy…GO AWAY FOUL THOUGHTS!
“I’m so sorry Envy.”
“B-but I paid, I gave you the cheque…” I shook my head; this can’t be happening this can not be happening.
“It bounced Envy.” His tone kept that sympathy and sadness. He really was sorry about what was happening.
Wait what. “What do mean it ‘bounced’?!” My eyes were starting to water.
He sighed, “It means you don’t have the money, which means can’t pay me, which means…” he gesture to the eviction notice in my hands.
“Harvey, I can’t. Please just give me a little more time please Harvey…” I pleaded only barely keeping back the emotion threatening to pour from my eyes.
“I can’t Envy. The others on the board and the residents think I’m too soft on you. The say I’m screwing you and this is how I’m paying you. I’m sorry Envy. I really tried, I really did.”
I nodded and wiped away my bastard tears.
“You have twenty-four hours to pack and leave; I wish I could give you longer. I really am sorry Envy.” He comfortingly patted my shoulder before leaving.
I closed the door staring at the condemning letter in my hand. We were being evicted.
I placed it on the table and walked to the bed where Eppi was. Ash caught my wrist and pulled me back to him hugging me. I stared at the wall behind him with emotionless eyes. “I have no where left to go.” I whispered then pulled away from him turning back to Eponine.
I shook Eppi’s shoulder, her eyes fluttered open. “Eppi, baby, wake up. We have to go.” My voice was shaky.
She yawned. “Where we going?” she asked drowsy. She sat up and looked at me occasionally rubbing her eyes.
“We…we just gotta go baby, we can’t live here anymore…” I was so close to breaking down.
She rubbed her eyes again and pulled at her over sized t-shirt. “Why?”
This child doesn’t give up. I took a heavy sigh, fully aware of Ashley watching everything. “You see baby, Mummy has to pay Harvey to live here but Mummy has no money so I can’t pay Harvey. That means we have to leave and find a new home.”
“Oh.” Wow; she actually understood that. “Do we get to live in Grandda’s house again?” she smiled at the thought of going back to Dad’s.
I shook my head pressing my lips together to stop from crying; this hard enough without the thought of Dad. Gee, thanks Eppi.
“No baby, we can’t go back there. That’s not our house anymore.”
She looked down at the duvet frowning; processing the information I already knew she knew. I crawled onto my bed and sat next to her. I pulled her onto my lap. I didn’t care about Ash’s presence anymore.
“Mummy, do we hav to lwiv wiv fake Grandma again?” she didn’t look happy saying that. She wrapped her thin, short arms around my waist and I hugged tightly refusing to cry.
“Never baby. I’ll never bring you back to her, never.” I whispered. I pulled her back and looked at her. “Now we’ll get you dressed and we’ll pack okay?”
She nodded and climbed off the bed. I picked her up and pulled off her BVB shirt. I turned to Ashley, “Hey emm…could you help pack while I dress her?”
He nodded and yes.
“Thanks.” I gave him a weak smile. “The cases are under the bed.”
I dressed Eppi in a blue t-shirt with a carton elephant face on it and black shorts with black toddler All Stars. I let her brush her own hair and teeth herself; Dad had though how to before he died and she hated it when people tried to help her with them. I was lucky she still let me wash her hair.
As Eppi disappeared into the bathroom I began to gather her clothes and packed them into one of the two suitcases Ash had put on my bed. I told Ashley to collect up the few toys she had and her Black Veil Bride merch; which is basically all of my merch that had passed on to her.
I packed away my photos of Dad. I tried to image that we were going on a holiday not leaving a home. As much as I hated the apartment I had grown attached to it. It was the only place where I could pretend I had no memories of times with Black Veil Brides.
I will not cry; I will be strong for Eponine.
