A/N: Get ready for the awesomeness!!! :)
“Serenity, hurry up. We don’t have all day.” My social worker called. I packed the last few items into the box that contained all that I owned, literally. After that I grabbed my backpack and walked down the ratty stairs. At the bottom step I tripped on the frayed carpet and landed on my face at the expensively adorned feet of my social worker, Ms. Sosa.
“Wow, how you got adopted, I will never know.” She sneered and turned, leaving the building. I got up and followed her out nervously. She unlocked her fancy BMW and climbed in. That’s the thing with social workers and orphanages; they take the money the government gives them for the kids and use it as if it were a bonus. Then they screw the health inspectors so they don’t get busted for it. Nasty skanks. I made my way to the car and hopped in the backseat; I wasn’t allowed in the front. I fiddled with the flap on my box and stayed silent. My pale fingers ran over the rough material of my shorts. It was happening again; I was being sent off to who-knows-where to live with god-knows-who. I was nervous; my social worker liked to pick random people from the applying list. As a result, I have lived in 87 different homes, all of them in different places, states, and one time even a different country where all they spoke was Spanish. And all of them had turned out bad, really bad. Yeah, I didn’t like my social worker very much.
“I’m dropping you off at the airport, then your new…parents will pick you up from there. Understood?” I simply nodded and continued staring out the window, not caring if she saw or not. I wondered where I was going if I had to get on an airplane to get there. “Serenity?”
I continued to daydream. Maybe it was Hawaii, or Alaska, I’ve always wanted to go to Alaska.
“Serenity, answer me.”
Nothing came from my mouth.
“SERENITY, GODDAMN IT, LISTEN TO ME WHEN I TALK TO YOU AND ANSWER ME ALREADY!” she screamed. I met her eyes in the rear view mirror.
“Yes, Ms. Sosa?” she groaned and kept driving. I heard her mutter, “It’s your own damn fault if you get lost in the airport, then.”
I smirked.
Sosa turned on the radio to some of her hip-hop and rap crap. I winced as the awful sound hit my ears; and apparently she saw, because she then proceeded to turn up the volume and sing to the song. I covered my ears in a childish manner and asked if she could turn it off, only to be answered by a louder volume and even more off-key singing. I wished I had an iPod, so I could listen to some real music. My kind of music was better than the other teenagers’ shit. I had never met anybody who liked the same bands I did. Nope, half of them called it ‘screamo crap’ and the other half hadn’t even heard of anything outside their world of Snoop Dog(?), 50 cent, and whatever the hell LMFAO was. Idiots. No taste what-so-ever.
“We’re stopping for gas and something to eat. Do you want anything?” Sosa asked bluntly.
“Oh, now you want to feed me, eh?” I said sarcastically. She shot me a dirty look. “Yeah, sure, whatever you get me.” I stayed in the car as Sosa got out and hooked it up to the gas thingy. She then walked over to the Burger King and came back out with food. I rolled down my window and she tossed me a small pack of fries.
“Thanks.” I muttered. I popped one in my mouth and smiled secretly. I love French fries. Well, I love anything to do with potatoes, really. But French fries were my favorite. I think I had a secret obsession. Curly, waffle, steak, string, regular—you name it, I like it. I finished off the little pack of heaven and got out of the car to throw it away. After I returned from the trash can, we drove off to the airport. The drive itself was long; I'm talking 4 hours long. All of it was spent with the speakers blasting shitty music and Sosa singing at the top of her lungs just trying to annoy me. It worked.
