After a night of crying I woke up with puffy red eyes and blotchy cheeks. I did my morning routine and wore some black track pants and a baggy hood.

I slowly walked down stairs to my Aunty having her breakfast. She looked up with surprise.

“April, you’re up early, the head master called, I heard what happened yesterday, why didn’t you tell me?”

I put my head down and fiddled with the hem of my jumper. I walked slowly to the kitchen and grabbed a cup of coffee and lent up against the bench.

“Come on April.”

She must have noticed I wasn’t going to talk about it as she stood at the entrance of the kitchen with keys in her hand.

I nodded and tipped the coffee out and made my way to the car. Once Aunt Shelly got to the school I slowly got out and the first time ever, everyone was looking at me.

I automatically put my head down and walked fast to my locker, but when I got there Zane was leaning up against the door. I walked slower but not slow enough.

“April.”

My head snapped up to meet Zane’s expressionless face. I cocked my head to the side and just looked at him.

“Look I don’t know why you punched me and slapped me, but I’m sorry, I didn’t know you were mute, which doesn’t make much sense since you talked to me.”

I shook my head and whispered. “I’m not mute.”

Zane raised his eyebrows and gave me a questioning look. I shook my head at his expression and unlocked my locker getting my book out. When I turned back again, Zane was still standing there staring at me.

I raised my eyebrow at him and put my hand on my hip.

“Sorry.”

It was only a whisper but enough that I heard it, it made me want to ask so many questions. But I didn’t. I ignored my thoughts and went off to class, that was on the other side of the school.

Throughout the day I felt eyes on my back, when I turned I would always see the same eyes that belonged to Zane. I hunched my shoulder over hoping that I could hide my face from him, but whatever movement that I made would only cause more holes burning in my back.

The siren went and I jumped out of my seat and ran to my locker, hoping I could get away from Zane and his stares. Once I reached my locker I grabbed my lunch and headed outside.

Once I found a spot I sat down and let my legs soak the sun and ate my lunch. No one disturbed me and not one told me to move, but once again I did see Zane staring at me. I mentally groaned and wished he would stop staring.

Suddenly I felt the coldness of ice water hit my back. I shrieked and jumped up in surprise but only to be beaded down with more water. I sat up feeling the water drop off my face. I looked up and saw students from some of my classes in fits of laugher.

I put my face down hiding my embarrassment and any tears that wanted to come out. I grabbed my bag and lunch that had been soaked in water and tried to get up. When I did I felt strong arms on my waist helping me up. I turned around and saw Zane’s face full of worry.

“Here let me help you.”

I gave him a confused look when he took my bag and put in over his shoulder.

“Come with me and let’s get you some dry clothes.”

I nodded and followed his lead.
