Fang's POV
We finally pull into the hospital parking lot after an hour of driving. Well, and hour for Nudge, Max, Iggy, and I but only 30 minutes for Ryan. Still that's a long time! We get a parking pass and find the closest spot. Thank God we didn't use Iggy's truck to get to the beach, because apparently people don't know how to park. We all hop out and run to the entrance. We go to the receptionist desk and a man with glasses, who looks like he hates his job, asks, "How may I help you?" "We're here to see my grandmother. Her name is Carmen Cortez. She came in the ambulance today from a fall." I answer. He looks up the name and says, "Room 215. It's on the 2nd floor and it'll be on your right." "Thanks!" We all say heading to the elevator. We get in and Nudge presses the 2nd floor button. The elevator is slow, which makes Ryan and I fidget even more. Our father used to stick us in the small closet in our old house. We became claustrophobic. When the elevator finally stops Ryan and I jump out, breathing identical sighs of relief. "Come on you guys. 215 is this way." Max says, pointing down the hall. She leads the way and soon we are in Nudge, Ryan, and my grandma's room. She's awake and is shushing our grandfather. He looks worried and angry. "¡Hola Abuela! ¡Hola Abuelo!" Ryan says, breaking the depressing mood with his happy self. They look over and both get a huge smile on their faces. "Ryan, oh come here and give me a hug! My goodness I haven't seen you for so long! I think you're taller than Fang!" Abuela says cheerfully. "¡Oye! He is not taller than me! He's still got an inch to grow to be as tall as me!" I retort. Ryan hugs our grandpa first then lean down and hugs our grandma. He kisses both of her cheeks, something only they do. "Nudge, sweetie, I'm guessing you have talked to Ryan already?" Abuelo asks as he beckons my little sister over. She nods and opens her mouth. I look over at Max and she looks at me. We both roll our eyes as Nudge starts talking. Ryan stares at her in amazement. She finally takes a breath, I have no idea what she was saying, I tuned her out. "I also found out why we call Fang Fang!" My head snaps up. "Nudge! Please tell me! I need to know! I can't find out only at our wedding!" Max begs. Max never begs unless she really wants something, such as information, for me to stop tickling her, but mostly she begs for food. "Go ahead. I swear if you laugh Iggy, I'll kill you." I say. Max looks excited, well that's good. "Nicholas Colmillo Cortez! His middle name is Fang in Spanish!" Nudge says happily. Iggy turns his back to me. His shoulders start to shake so I hit him on the head, hard. "Hey! You didn't have to hit me that hard! I could have brain damage now!" Iggy snaps as he turns around. "I told you not to laugh. And we're in a hospital! If you really think you have even more brain damage than you've got, go get an MRI." I snap back. Iggy sticks his tongue out at me. I stick mine out at him. We both made the mistake of doing this near Max. She huffs and grabs our tongues and pulls. "Ow!" We cry out as she lets go. "You guys are 17! Act like it at least in public!" My fiancee snaps in a hushed tone. Iggy shrugs and does it again. Max then proceeds to knuckle punch him where the sun don't shine. Ryan, Abuelo, and I all wince. Iggy falls to the floor in the fetal position. "What did I say?" Max asks, bending down to my fallen amigo. "To stop being childish." Iggy says through clenched teeth. "Good boy." Max smirks as she pats him on the head. He just groans. Nudge runs over to her boyfriend whereas I walk over my Abuela, "You ok?" She smiles and says, "Oh I'm fine sweetheart. Just a dizzy spell." Abuelo mutters something angrily which causes Abuela to glare at him. "¡Oye! Can we make this a happy time please? Abuela is fine, Sidekick is here, everything is good right now!" I snap. Everyone nods then a doctor walks in. "Hello everyone. Mrs. Cortez, you're free to leave. I do want a follow up appointment in about a month to check up on you. That sound like a plan?" He says kindly. "Of course. Thank you." Abuela says with a smile. Max uses me as a shield to hide from the doctor. Normally, I'd think she was just playing, but that doctor wasn't just any guy. He's Dr. Jeb Batchelder, aka Max's dad. Her blood parents are divorced and Max lives with her Mom and Stepdad. She hates spending time with any part of her family related to Jeb except for her little brother Ari. He lives with his mom in Kansas, so they don't see each other in person that often, but they sure do Skype a lot. "Max, I can see you. Can we talk in the hallway please?" Jeb says. She sighs but, starts to move then I get in front of her, blocking her from Jeb's sight. "You don't have custody over her Jeb. She doesn't have to do anything you tell her or answer any questions you have. Now I think you should leave. There are other patients to see in this hospital, aren't there?" I say calmly. I think I sound civil when I talk like this, but the rest of friends and family all say I sound like I'm gonna kill someone. Jeb glares at me, but I glare right back. "Max. Hallway. Now." Jeb snaps. "Go away Jeb." Max snaps, sneering her father's name. He looks shocked for a second, but then he stands up straighter and says, "Fine." He turns and leaves without another word. "Max, come here sweetie." Abuela says soothingly. Max smiles a little and walks over. They hug and Abuela whispers something in Max's ear, which makes her smile. "Well, I'm ready to leave this place. Let's go." Abuela says happily. "Right. I'll go sign you out." Abuelo says. Max and Nudge push all the guys out so they can help Abuela get dressed. "Well, I finally get to go home." Ryan says, smile on his face.
