--- Part 1, June 2018 ---

"Dad? Dad! Let's go! We're gonna be late!"

"I will be right with you, son. I am just finishing up. You know how you cannot leave a failed experiment be."

By now you have probably realized that this family of three, The Stevens, are scientists with horrible time management.

Today is my first ever science fair and I have worked really hard on it. I idolize my dad and his work and it is no wonder that we are really close. I did not make any use of my dad's help for this fair and I really want to impress him.

When people ask me what I want to be when I grow up, I simply point to my dad and tell them that I want to be a scientist like him.

"Dad! Please hurry! Mom's already in the car and she said she's going to drive away if we do not show up in the following five minutes!"

"Alright, alright I'm almost done. Just a little bit of this... and we get the formula tha..."

My dad's sentence was cut short when there came a small explosion and a puff of blue smoke from the small opening of the door.

The door flung open and my dad stumbled through, coughing and wheezing. "That was something I have never seen before!" He falled over his feet and held on to my shoulders. "Dare I say that was a success! But ssshhhhh", my dad whispered through his teeth, "we don't want the molecules to change their mind when they hear us talking about them. Benzodiazepines can be very... snobbish." A menacing laugh escaped my dad's lips.

"Let us be off!" My dad said with enthusiasm. "Don't want to miss my son's first science fair!" With that he stood up and rumaged ny hair. He walked to the door, flailing his legs over the hardwood floors.

It's so interesting seeing the different effects that my dad's experiments have on him. His first attempt made him almost fully limp. Thank goodness the anesthetic did not reach his diaphragm, so when he screamed my mom and I heard him and rushed to his aid.

I am so contempt with my life. I love my family.

"Tyler! Whe'e in t'heck are ya?" After two minutes, the third anesthetic moved from his limbs, to finer muscles in his mouth and face, i.e. the superior pharyngeal constrictor, the obicularis oris and his tongue.

"Coming!" Off we go!

--- Part 2, February 2023 ---

"Tyler, come say goodbye to your dad real quick."

Just like any normal family with a scientist as a dad, you don't get much bonding time. His collegues are often calling him for help with their project or company, or they need advice when they see that their formula isn't successful. But this is the first time he has to go away for such a long time. Thus, I have to make every moment count.

I'm in my final year of school now and I can't wait to finish! Last year I worked really hard on my science and biology to impress the university I want to study at. After I sent in my report card and answered the all important question of why I want to study at BioChem College, I found out that my dad and the owner of the college were best friends in high school and went to the same university, but had to part ways because Dr. Stan lost interest in science. Luckily for me, I'm temporarily accepted!

"Ty?" That's my dad.

"Sorry dad, day dreaming as always"

"I am going away for a whole month. I'm giving you my watch to hold on to and I want you to count the seconds until I get back. Please take care of your mother for me. I'll miss you, my boy." He gave me a tight hug and rubbed my ear, a quirk he picked up.

"Love you, dad.", "Love you, angel.", me and my mom said at the same time. My dad laughed, gave my mom a hug and a kiss and then closed the door behind him.

I clutched my dad's watch will a dull ache in my heart. I miss him already.
