-----Returning to the new normal was a process that Holland forced herself to continue. It was far from easy, but she knew Bellamy's words were the truth. She could help down here, and she needed to continue her help make Earth survivable for everyone.
Returning to camp after the John Murphy event was different than it had been before. Holland fell asleep on Bellamy's back as he carried her, but she woke up just before they got back. The air felt thick and heavy with responsibility, the one they carried now that they had been deemed leaders of the group. When they passed through the gate, Holland slipped off his back and murmured a quiet "thanks" before disappearing to her tree again.
She didn't sleep at all since she stayed awake to watch the stars. They were just as beautiful as they were from outer space, and it made her feel closer to the Ark. It was a welcomed comfort after the events of the day.
Her mind was subdued when a high-pitched whine emitted from the monitor bracelet on her wrist. A shock ran up her arm, and Holland suppressed a flinch. She looked back to all the people in camp, and it seemed like they all felt the same thing. The faint glow from her bracelet dimmed, then faded altogether.
"No..." she whispered, running her left hand over the dead monitor. Monty was going to contact the Ark that night. He had rigged Clarke's bracelet to the drop ship wiring and was supposed to send a signal. He was delayed by the whole Murphy incident, but it was still happening that night. If the bracelets died... All the signals were cut off. No signal meant that everyone on the ground was dead to the Ark. Every. Single. One.
Holland released a tense breath, her eyes flicking up to watch Finn rush out of the drop ship and sprint out of camp. Clarke hurried after him. Once they disappeared, she sank back against the tree root. Now, they had absolutely no contact with the Ark. No bracelets, no radio, no video, and no chance in hell of surviving without the resources that they weren't sent with.
She found herself retracting one of the last things she said to Wells. Started from the bottom, and they were still on it.
---
As daylight approached, Holland was still awake with her eyes trained on the sky. It had been a quiet night after everyone stopped freaking out over the bracelets and resigned themselves to their tents. Bellamy had disappeared to his tent, Clarke and Finn were out in the woods, and everyone else was asleep. Holland pushed up and off the tree roots before making her way over to the fire pit.
She stared into the flickering embers, as if they held some answer to the question weighing on everyone's mind. What were they going to do? No Ark communication, no real knowledge of Earth beyond the "skills" they acquired in school and the few days they had been on the ground. What chance of survival did they really have? Bellamy was the oldest out of anyone, and he couldn't be older than twenty-three. The majority were seventeen years old. If they wern't old enough to be executed, how were they old enough to become responsibly for themselves after being in prison for months on end?
Holland huffed, sinking down onto one of the logs by the fire. Being the ambassadors to Earth was hard enough, let alone the fact that the majority of the Ark didn't know about it. And now, they probably never will. They had no survival skills, let alone the fact that the Grounders wern't happy about the 100 coming down. The bracelets are gone, and they only have each other to depend on. It was hard enough for Bellamy and Clarke to lead, and now it was only going to get worse.
