Next thing I knew, Newt, Alby, and I had made our way to the place for gatherings. Newt showed me through the door. I smiled and thanked him.
Was it just me, or was he staring at me? I shook it off, reminding myself I was just on edge.
Alby spoke up. "Alright, quiet down." He said, the crowd quieting down instantly. "This here is our new greenie." He gestured towards me. "She's still working out some stuff around here. I want you to act accordingly. Am I understood?" They all nodded their heads as I turned beet red.
Then one by one they all came up and introduced themselves.
Minho, Chuck, Winston, Zart, Thomas, Frypan. The names all blurred together. I knew I would never keep them all straight.
I saw Gally somewhere near the end if the line. Finally a familiar face!
"What's up greenie?" He joked.
I pointed up. "This lovely roof." I responded.
" And extremely sassy." He smiled. "C'mon, let's go outside. We have a bonfire planned."
I turned my gaze to a corner where Newt and Alby where. They where talking and kept glancing over at me. That told me they where probably talking about me. I mean, I am the new greenie. Plus, the first and only girl.
I turned my attention back to Gally. "A bonfire sounds great." I smiled.
He nodded and smiled, then led me out the door.
I turned around before I followed and saw Newt staring at me, I turned back around and quickly followed Gally.
Why was Newt staring? I figured it was jut because they where talking about me. No big deal.
I finally caught up with Gally. Danged short legs. I had to stand up on my tip- toes to become eye level with their chin.
I followed him to a spot near the homestead. As twilight fell, I watched him walk around the fire pit. It was built with a large amount of wood in the center.
I started to follow him but I tripped over I rock I didn't see and landed promptly on my face instead.
Fabulous.
Now I looked like a klutz.I heard footsteps. I rolled onto my back. Gally had returned.
"Are you okay greenie?" He asked, trying not to laugh.
"Yeah. I just wanted to see this rock up close and personal, Y'know?" I sassed back as I took his outstretched hand and brushed myself off.
This time he laughed. "You are quite the spitfire greenbean. Remind me not to tick you off."
He walked away to grab a torch. As I watched him go, I noticed everyone else had shown up. A few had come with unlit torches which Gally helped light. Then they threw their torches into the huge pile of wood. It crackled and flickered to life, the burning flames mesmerizing me.
And for the first time all day, I felt peace.
