This chapter is dedicated to Ruby, my bestest friend in the whole wide world, because I love her so much. Thanks for being so awesome, Rubz. I honestly couldn't ask for a better friend. <3
"Boys are unpredictable. This maybe not be news, but I'm starting to think it's one of the best things about them."
-Kate Brian, Megan Meade's Guide to the McGowan BoysCHAPTER 6: A Little More Ross
"Ay, chica! Turn up!" An arm swings over my shoulders, and I roll my eyes at an overexcited Ross. He has his shades on inside school and looks like a complete and utter idiot.
"Why are you so dumb?" I ask Ross, reaching up to take off his sunglasses. "You don't look cool with these on; you just look plain stupid."
Ross chuckles. "Well, that's just plain old rude."
I shrug lightly, not regretting speaking my mind. "Where's your brother been? I haven't seen him all day?" As innocent as the question sounded, I'd been seriously disappointed that he hadn't been at school all day. Last period is approaching, and Pierce is still AWOL.
"He's at Rachel's house. Apparently her mom wanted to talk to him about something important, though I don't understand why she couldn't talk to him after school about it. Which parent encourages ditching school?"
I think over the new information. "Wait, Rachel's mom? It must be pretty important then."
As I continue to ponder the situation, Ross' phone rings. I perk up a little, assuming Pierce is the one calling, but my glow falters as I realize it's just one of Ross' friends. I say goodbye to a distracted Ross and head to Calculus.
Twenty minutes into the class and six seconds away from falling asleep, I snap awake at the pinging sound of my phone. Luckily Ms. Haywire is oblivious to the sound, and I hastily turn off the ringer on my phone. A week had gone by, and my mom thankfully allowed me to start using my phone again, though the TV was still off limits.
Slight hope rushed through me, but it rushed out just as fast as I stared at the unfamiliar number popping up on my phone.
Hey, can I give you a ride home? I need some moral support lol
I surreptitiously hide my iPhone behind my Calculus book and try to figure out who's texting me. After a couple annoying minutes of the stranger forcing me to guess, Ross finally reveals himself. It turns out that Ross wants to drive me home because he has to pick up Pierce from the "witch's" house and needs some moral support in entering "her lair." Apparently, he had gotten my number from my Pierce because I was "as cool as they come." I can't pretend I wasn't flattered.
I reluctantly agree, though, not too eager to face the witch myself, and meet Ross at the front of the school as soon as school ends. He takes me to his flashy red Mercedes, and before I know it, we're speeding down the highway at a frightening speed.
"Ross, can you please, please drive at a normal rate? I'm actually fearing for my safety right now." Of course the idiot had put the windows down so my hair was flying around my face in a tangled mess.
"Babe, I've never gotten a ticket. Don't sweat it!"
His words turn out to be ironic because seconds later police sirens start blaring from behind us. Ross glances in his rearview mirror and just speeds up, laughing it off. I, on the other hand, completely freak out and begin hitting his arm.
"Ross, pull over! Pull over, idiot! Oh my god, I'm never going to get into college now! Great! We're gonna die! I'm going to jail! Please, for the love of God, pull over!"
