The next evening, Star and Shadow roamed the beach. They stopped by a high cliff. Star sat, looking at the celestial objects she had been named for. They glistened silvery and beautiful next to the moon. Star sighed to herself. Shadow sat next to her, and started to how. Although it was no Sunfire, but she appreciated the sound of his voice, which was both wonderful and comforting to her. She nuzzled deep into his warm fur, and joined her voice with his in expressing their sadness, their regret, and, buried somewhere beneath, their hope.
She must have fallen asleep at some point, because when she awoke, she was curled against Shadow's side, and his tail was wrapped about her. She sat up, licking Shadow's muzzle. In another few moments, he awoke.
Then she remembered why she had awoken. She stopped licking him, and listened intently. Shadow caught on immediately. He also began to pay extra attention.
Somewhere to the West of them, soft howls were coming from a clearing. She glanced at Shadow, and saw his eyes were narrowed. She began to rise, but he gave her the softest of possible nudges, and she stopped. The howls died down to playful yips, which confused Star. She had never heard yips like this before; they were almost like the yips of pups, but coming from more mature wolves. The higher voice sounded almost like it was giggling, somehow. Then, something louder than either of the voices snapped, and everything went quiet. Star froze, eyes wide, but whatever it was did not reveal itself.
