I Can't Think

Katie's POV
"Katie!" I hear a voice through the crowd. "Katie!" It's Travis!

"Yeah?" I say, turning around.

"Have you seen Percy and Annabeth yet this morning?"

"No," I fret, looking out at the pouring rain. They both live too close to school for a bus, but this rain must be freezing!

"Look!" yells Travis, " I see them!"

"Where?" I ask anxiously.

He points to the front doors, where they're standing, drenched, in a circle of staring students. They're all asking tons of questions, but Percy and Annabeth are just smiling at each other. Travis looks knowingly at me and I smile back.

As the crowd disperses, we approach them slowly.

"Annabeth, can I have my hoodie back?" Percy is saying.

"What? No! I love this thing!" Annabeth protests.

"But I'm cold!"

Annabeth grins devilishly and gives him a huge hug. I've never seen her this bold. Percy stumbles backwards, then wraps his arms around her in response.

"Warmer now?" She asks quietly.

"Yes," he breathes into her hair.

Percy's POV
The rain pounds on the roof as Annabeth and I sit in the back of the English classroom. I'm trying to pay attention, but the only thing I can think about is how perfectly she fit in my arms.
I look over at her. Even soaked to the bone, she's the prettiest thing I ever saw. She meets my eyes, blushes, and looks away. I wonder what's on her mind.

Annabeth's POV
I can't believe I hugged him. It was like all rational thought fled my mind and all I wanted was an excuse to ibe in his arms. What shocks me more, though, is that he hugged me back! And I think he should have smelled like the rain, but he still smelled like the sea.

Now he's sitting right next to me, and I can't even get my thoughts together enough to say something to him about it.

Mrs. Taylor stands up to address the class. "We're starting a unit on symbols in literature. I have assigned pairs for this project. You will be working together on a presentation that displays this subject. I will now read the names of partners.

"Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase..." she doesn't stop listing, but we've stopped listening.

Percy pumps his fist and scoots his desk closer to mine. "Got any ideas, Wise Girl?"

"Do you?" I raise my eyebrow, laughing.

Percy pouts, placing his chin on my shoulder. He looks up at me, trying his puppy dog eyes again.

"I can't think when you do that!" I complain. My eyes widen at my own words.

Percy grins, knowing he has the power now. "Why not?" He asks innocently.

"Um, it's just that, well... you know, I just can't," I stutter.

"But I need you to think, because that's not something I'm very good at!" Percy whines. I flick his forehead and he jolts backwards.

"That's better," I smile, "I can think now!"

He scoots his chair closer in response and opens his mouth to say something, but the bell rings and I rush from the room.

I hurry at my locker, but Percy appears just as I'm closing it. I'm psyching myself out.

"What did I do?" He asks.

"Nothing. I just had to get to class," I try to stay calm.

"Well, I'll get lost if you don't take me!" He whines.

"Whining doesn't suit you, Seaweed Brain," I call as I walk away. That's a lie. Everything suits him!

He jogs to catch up. "Seaweed Brain? Where did you get that?"

"Where did you get Wise Girl?"

"I'll tell you when you tell me," he grins.
