To kill time, I pull out my phone and sit at the corner of the store on the candy section. I lean my head back only to look up when I hear something fall, I look up but see nothing. I stand up and look around but I do not see anything, not even the guy that I saw working when I walked in. I slowly walk around the store only to jump when someone speaks behind me.

"Oh, I'm sorry I did not mean to scare you", the guy that I saw working says.

"That's ok, I don't know why I'm so jumpy", I let out an awkward laugh which he returns.

"Do you need help with that?", I point to the small and cute jelly bean cans.

"Umm, sure, thanks. Sorry for scaring you, again", he scratches the back of his neck making it more obvious how awkward the situation was. Ignoring the awkward atmosphere, we both concentrate on picking up the cans from the floor.

"Thanks"

"Oh, no problem", I give him a friendly smile which he returns. When I'm about to go sit again the door opens and my friend walks in, or better said runs.

"Come on we have to hurry!", are the first words out of her mouth, okay then.

"Hello to you too, and doesn't the game start in an hour?"

"Yes but, he wants us over there right now. He says he wants to spend more time with you since you are going back home tomorrow"

"Oh, ok let me just get something to eat", she smiles while rolling her eyes and pulls my hand.

"There is food over there, he took care of all of that. Now let's go"

"Are you sure?", I know she is lying, she is too lazy to go buy food and Carl never eats before his games.

"Yes, now let's go", she assures me and pulls my hand again till we are finally out of the store. By now there were many families, friends and couples walking around. And once again I got lost in my thoughts, and the feeling that something was missing.

"What's wrong?", Lyla asks poking me on the shoulder.

"I'm just a little worn out", maybe I'm just imagining all of this.

After walking for a while we finally reach the basketball court, and as soon as Carl turns we make eye contact and he approaches us with a wide smile.

"Hey! What's with that blank stare you've got?"

"Don't you have to practice? Why don't you just go join the team already?"

With his cheerful personality, he was quite popular at school. Even though we went to the same elementary and middle school, I felt a growing distance between us, and I was only able to comment back with a biting tone.
