NICOLE’S POV
“I’m just saying that maybe you should just let it go. Focus your energies somewhere else,” Demi said as I listened through the window. Thank goodness Demi had a balcony or I would be clinging onto a window ledge. I had been prepared to announce myself, but I didn’t want to interrupt her conversation with Selena.
“I don’t want to,” Selena snapped. “If I just work a little harder Nick is sure to notice me.”
“I don’t know why I even try,” Demi groaned. “Both of my friends are complete wackos! You can stop standing on my balcony and come in now Nicole.”
“How did you know I was out there?” I asked as I walked in
“Nick called,” Demi said flatly. “He said you ran away from home, and he figured you would come here first. That boy has got scary, smart radar on you.”
“I think it’s sweet that Nick is so clos with Nicole,” Selena said with a smile. “If you two weren’t brother and sister I would think I had real competition for Nick.”
“We’re not brother and sister,” I said sinking onto Demi’s bed. “I’m adopted.” Demi and Selena sat on either side of me, and I told them the events that had led up to me running away.
“Crap,” Demi said. “So what are you going to do?”
“Do?” I asked looking up in confusion. “What are you talking about?”
“Are you going to look for your biological family?” Selena asked. “Or are you going to stay with the Jonas’?”
“I don’t know,” I said. “I just freaked out and ran. The two people I called mom and dad lied to me all these years. They told me I was their family when I wasn’t.”
“They lied to us too. But you’re family in every way that counts,” I heard a familiar voice say from Demi’s doorway.
“Go away Nick,” I said looking up to see him entering the room followed by Kevin. “You brought Kev here too? What, is Joe waiting out in the hall?”
“I’m your ride,” Kevin said. “Demi does live a considerable distance away. How did you get here?” I groaned as Kevin’s protective older brother side popped out again. Why did he care now? I’m not his real sister. Nothing was like it was before.
“I hitchhiked with a creepy drifter,” I said sarcastically. “I walked you dork. I used the time it took to get here to think. I’m not going home with you guys.”
“She can stay here if she wants,” Demi added. “Maybe it will give her time to cool off.” I saw Nick’s face fall as Demi offered me a place to stay. Did he really think I was just going to go back with him after everything?
“Mom and dad are worried about you,” Nick said.
“They’re not my parents,” I snapped. “I’m staying with Demi tonight. I’ll see you guys at school.”
“You’re coming with us,” Nick said. He was angry. I rarely saw Nick get this angry. I opened my mouth to protest when Selena stepped in.
“No, she’s staying right here,” Selena snapped. “Stop being so possessive Nick. Nicole needs some space right now. You need to go.” Demi and I watched her in shock. Selena never did anything that might upset Nick, and she was here standing up for me. Nick growled before marching from the room. “Stupid possessive boys. I don’t know what I ever saw in him.”
“Does this mean you’re finally over Nick?” Demi asked. “What changed your mind?” Selena looked down for a moment, and I watched her sniff back some tears. She wasn’t over Nick by a long shot.
“I just don’t like how he was treating Nicole. Like she was his or something,” Selena sniffed. Kevin walked over to her with concern deep in his eyes. Selena put out a hand stopping him from hugging her. “Just leave me alone Kevin. You need to take Nick home.”
“Can we just talk for a second?” Kevin asked. “There’s something I want to tell you.”
“No,” Selena quickly replied. “Not here or now. I’m not ready for that.” Demi and I exchanged glances wondering just what they were talking about. It felt like we were interrupting a very private conversation. “Just go.” Kevin nodded giving me a quick hug before walking out the door.
“What was that all about?” I asked as Selena plopped down next to me.
“Nothing,” Selena said grinning as if nothing had happened. “I think tonight calls for a slumber party to help get your mind off of things. You can borrow pajamas from Demi. I’ll go call my mom and ask her if I can sleep over.”
“That was strange,” Demi said as Selena left the room. I nodded agreeing with her. It was all very odd indeed.
