SELENA'S POV
"Are you okay with Nicole moving out?" I asked as we ate our lunches. He merely grunted. "Do you think Nicole will use Anderson as her last name from now on?" He turned his head so that only his beautiful brown curls faced me. Fine. If he wanted to ignore me then I wasn't going to let him off that easy. "So I've decided on a foolproof plan to get Nick to fall in love with me. I'm going to sneak into his room, strip naked, and offer myself to--" I grinned as he stood letting his lunch clatter to the ground and grabbed my wrist. He swung me around until we were facing one another.
"That had better be one of your damn jokes," Kevin growled down at me. He took in my smiling face before pushing me away. "Just leave me alone Selena."
"I don't want to leave you alone," I snapped grabbing his hand in mine. "I've been trying to get you to talk to me all day."
"I think it's better if we leave the talking to a minimum."
"See this is why I didn't want to know how you felt about me. Look how it's hurting our friendship."
"So you want to go back to how it was? Me keeping quiet about how I feel? You chasing after Nick when he's obviously in love with Nicole? Day in and day out watching the person you love going after someone else while your heart breaks in two?"
"Okay, maybe before wasn't so great either."
"Why Nick?" He had asked the question so softly that I had barely heard it. "You met us all at the same time so why him?"
"What do you remember about the day we met?" I asked.
"It was at the church auction. We were all running around playing and invited you to join us. Then over time we all got to know one another. Demi was there too."
"Yeah but Demi didn't want to share. She pushed me and told me to leave. She was kind of intimidating for a seven year old."
"That's Demi for you. I still don't understand how this answers my question about Nick."
"I had started to walk off crying to my mom when Nick pulled me back. He told me Demi was just jealous because I was pretty. No boy outside of my family had ever called me pretty before."
"Crap. Nick had some smooth moves as a kid," Kevin said with a chuckle. I looked over admiring the light as it hit his dark eyes. Kevin was much more handsome than I gave him credit for.
"Why me?" His chuckling stopped immediately. "I've seen the way the girls in this school watch you. Why me instead of them? I'm a loser. A nobody."
"I can tell you the exact minute that I fell in love with you," Kevin said. I was stunned by how confident he sounded. “You walked into my room and grabbed one of my guitars. You started playing it causing one of the strings to snap. And that’s when I knew.”
“Wait, what?” I asked more lost than ever. “You didn’t talk to me for a week after that. That can’t be it. Fighting with me doesn’t make you love me somehow-“
“You make me mad all the time,” he said cursing lightly under his breath. “You open your mouth and I want to scream I get so mad at you. I don’t think you even see how much you frustrate me. But the thing is—I like that you make me mad. I like fighting with you. I don’t want to fight with anyone but you.” The sincerity of his voice stunned me. I leaned in wanting to press his lips to mine. Wanting to feel his sincerity on my lips. Wanting to show him that my love for him was slowly growing. Kevin pushed me back before standing up and gathering the remains of his lunch. “We can’t do that. Not while you’re still in love with Nick.”
“But Kevin—“ I broke off my halfhearted protest knowing he was right. Kevin deserved better than that. “I’m sorry Kevin. I want to let go of Nick. It’s just so hard. I’ve spent all these years imagining Nick was my soulmate. The one. It’s hard to just go back and erase that picture from my mind.” I grabbed his hand preventing him from leaving. “But I’m working on it.” Kevin leaned in close until he could whisper into my ear.
“In my imagination it’s always been you,” he whispered before dropping my hand and walking away. I allowed my mind to drift as I pictured my future. In the past my daydreams had always served as a reminder of what and who I wanted in my life. I saw myself standing up in the church on my wedding day and there was Nick smiling back at me. In my mind’s eye Nick’s face morphed until I found myself looking at Kevin. He smiled down at me and I felt the love that radiated from him. I smiled as the dream Kevin leaned in closer to kiss me.
“Sel! There you are!” Demi shouted startling me back to the real world. “Nicole invited us to come spend the night at her brother’s tonight. Isn’t that cool?” I smiled at Demi and Nicole shoving away my previous thoughts. Later. I would figure this all out later.
“What were you thinking about?” Nicole asked me as we all walked towards class.
“Nothing special, why?” I asked.
“You just looked so…happy,” Nicole said. I just smiled in response.
[AN: I’m back from vacation! What do you all think?]
