Slater POV
I woke up to the smell of freshly cooked pancakes and music playing from downstairs. I could hear my mom singing and her voice was heavenly. I put on some gray joggers and go downstairs. My mom was wearing one of my dads big football shirts that went to her mid thigh and it looked like she wasn't wearing anything underneath. Her hair was straightened and when she saw me she smiled wide.
"Good morning my beautiful baby Slater. Are you hungry? I made blueberry and caramel pancakes with grits and bacon." She smiled and I sat down.
I loved grits and caramel pancakes. They've been my favorite since I was four. How did she know?
"Yeah thanks Fern." I said as she put a plate in front of me. She put some orange juice in a cup and handed it to me.
"Baby, just call me Mom." She said but I already stuffed my mouth with grits and couldn't talk. "Are you excited for school today?" She asked and sat down at the table in front of me.
"No, dad wants me to get good grades and go to school everyday but I really don't want to go today." I replied and took a big bite of bacon.
Damn my mom knew how to cook.
I eyed her down and finally noticed the tattoos on her right leg. It said "I sacrificed for him" with a drawing of snakes around it. I was curious but instead asked why she was wearing my dads shirt.
"Oh well I was dirty and took a shower but I didn't have any clothes so I don't think Moss would mind if I borrowed a shirt." She smiled and gulped down her coffee.
"He loves his football shirts though. He doesn't let me or Finn touch it or he will...well it's best if we just don't touch it."
Fern's eyes widened. "Your father does get mad easily but I think he has gotten a little better at handling his emotions. But if he ever touches you I'll take him down faster than you can snap your finger." We both laughed and that was the first time I ever seen my mom laugh. It was amazing.
We keep eating and cracking jokes until Finn comes downstairs. "It smells great in here." He smiled wide.
"Thanks you. I made egg burritos for you. They're in the fridge."
"Wow thanks mom. I love egg burritos."
How did she know he liked egg burritos? I only knew that because he always get them from Publix and tells me to get them for him sometimes.
"I knew you would like it. How about we do something fun today?" She eyed me and Finn up and down. "We could go shopping for whatever your heart desires."
"Really?! That would be great."
I smiled but inside I was wondering where she would get the money from. My dad was a carpenter and made a lot of money but he would only spend it on stuff we really needed.
Although I was having fun I knew something was wrong with this situation. But if Finn was happy so was I.
