Hey guys. Welcome back to the cafe!
Sorry it took so long to get back to you all. I've been super busy XD.
Anyway, let's get right into it!
Today's question comes from RuledByChaos, and it reads:
Hi! I'm considering writing a Creepypasta fanfiction sometime in the future and was wondering, what would you say is the most important thing to remember when writing one is? Is there anything I should avoid?
Ok. So I personally LOVE this question. And I think there are plenty of tips I could give you.
First of all, I think the most important thing to remember when writing a Creepypasta fanfiction is to HAVE FUN.
This is very important because having fun is what makes writing your story from start to finish way easier. Before you start worrying about all the complicated stuff like grammar and audience, think about how to make the experience of writing your story fun for yourself.
Second of all, consider what YOU want.
Different authors have different reasons for writing. Some write for themselves, and other write for their audiences. I think it's important to be one of those authors who writes for BOTH. Always remember that.
Writing just for yourself might cause you to ignore all the things that your readers need in order to truly enjoy your fan fiction. It is, after all, FANFICTION, and your main audience consists of the fans of the subject you're writing about, so they're super important.
But if you only write for your audience, that can potentially lead you down the path of unnecessary stress and writer's block, and you'll eventually fizzle out and probably quit (if you're doing a xReader request sort of book, then this doesn't apply completely). If you allow your audience to completely dictate the plot of the book, it's no longer your own. Not only that, but it's going to reach a point where you won't be able to dig yourself out of the labyrinth of different ideas that you just randomly smashed together for your audience's sake.
If you hold the pen, you hold the power!
Next, you should try your best to be as clear as possible in your wording. The reason why I used the word clear and not descriptive here is because different authors feel comfortable doing different things. Description is good, so I definitely encourage you to use it, but you can have a good book without being overly descriptive ( as long as your grammar is good and you're getting your point across in good pace).
And that's another thing as well. Don't be so descriptive to the point where it detracts from the main points of the story. Then, it becomes more of a descriptive piece than a narrative story.
Things you should avoid:
1. Text walls - These are a pain. The rules of grammar state that you should always start a new paragraph whenever a new person is speaking. Doing this makes reading your story easy on all of us. No one wants to use their eyeballs to dig through huge walls of text trying to figure out who is saying what.
2. Text language- I definitely would not recommend using text language in your writing UNLESS your characters are actually texting. Your body sentences themselves should use Standard English (or whichever language you're writing in.)
3. Losing touch with the original story- This probably should've been at the top with all the other super important stuff but I'm putting it here instead. DO NOT forget the original story/ character you're basing your fanfiction around. People are reading the fanfiction because they love the original story/ character and would love to see different takes on it. It's your job as an author to remember that. Even if you plan to change the events/ their personalities, still remember this.
I think that these are the bare essentials that you'll need for your Creepypasta fanfictions.
General tips:
Write down ideas whenever they pop into your head.
Consider using music to set the mood as you're writing your fanfiction.
And lastly, views aren't everything. If you don't have many views at first, just focus on finishing a story that you can look at be be proud of!
I hope this helped! I'll be answering the next questions in the following chapters :)
Until next time.
