Chapter nine
Rez got behind the wheel of Bruce's car. When Maya got in next to him she gave him a meaningful look. 'You might want to buckle up. She gets suicidal when it comes to Alex.' He realized that now would not be the right time to ask for detail and buckled up, he had barely clicked the seatbelt into place, when Rez took off. They were pressed tightly against the seat as she sped down the road running every red light, and breaking every traffic law in existence. She swerved out of the way when an old lady crossing the road came into view, the entire contents of the car shoved against the right window of the car. 'Rez, you better step on it, we're not going to make it.' Mandy said and closed her eyes for a moment. 'Step on it?!' Bruce yelled, with a squeal. 'She already broke every traffic law ever invented. Just watching her drive will give way to some more rules!' Mandy and Rez ignored his panic and Maya just laughed at his concern. 'Told you, she can be dangerous if she wants to be.' The world outside the car was passing by in a blur. Bruce wondered how fast they were going, and at the thought the car sped up a little more, pushing him tighter against the seat. This girl gave new meaning to the term "pedal to the medal", he thought as they took a turn and a bottle of water hit him in the face, with a great velocity. He grunted but endured it when Mandy's voice broke his concentration off of the speed. 'Rez can you sense her yet?' she asked and Rez shook her head. 'How long Maya asked with a worried expression, that didn't look well at all, on her face. Bruce was worried now. What was wrong with Alex? When the car accelerated once more he knew that Rez sensed her. They were heading in the opposite direction of the school so he figured that she had ditched. The question was why? And why was Mandy so worried, did she have a foreboding or something. He never liked witches very much but Mandy did care a lot for Alex. And that was more than what her real family could say.
Rez stopped the car at the beginning of a trail that started to the woods. They made their way up the trail where they could soon here cussing and grunting. It didn't sound like Alex to him so Bruce decided that worrying was unnecessary. They walked in on a very disturbing scene; Alex was being pushed up against a ruined wall with a very tired looking man holding a knife to her throat. Bruce was going to jump in and save her but Mandy held him back. 'Let her handle it.' She said. He was about to argue but just then Alex took the knife from the basterd and made a precision cut on his left arm, and blood spurted out of the wound, he cried out in pain. Bruce was so occupied with the wounded man that he didn't notice Alex standing on the other side of the small clearing with a smile on her face. It was only now that Bruce saw the cut on her shoulder and the other just under her ear. Panic took over and he was about to kill this basterd when Alex advanced onto the man and did a maneuver that seemed impossible to him. She slid the knife easily into his chest and then pulled it out. 'I said who the hell sent you?' She said angrily the guy. He whimpered loudly but Alex didn't show him any mercy, she slapped him across the face and asked him again. He cried out but said nothing. Alex nodded to him. 'I thought so. Your silence won't be rewarded in this case, I assure you.' She said and kicked him out of her way, her face set in a hard line. Bruce had never seen her this way, not even on some of the myth websites he had seen. The image of Alex in the mental institution came back to him, he shuddered. She looked every bit like the guardians who had killed his father.... It hit him then; she was trained as one of the sacred ones. He wasn’t angry. It was probably a secret that she wanted to keep but he suddenly felt more fear toward her than to the man she had kicked to the ground. ‘We better get out of here. She’ll come looking for him, and if one of her goons smells us out we’re dead. I’ll have to call my parents again and convince them that I have a project Ghalia and I have to finish. Bruce, can we stay with you?’ she walked over to them slowly, Rez rushed over to help her. The cuts she had sustained in the fight seemed to be pretty deep but she hardly seemed to mind. ‘Why can’t we stay at the penthouse?’ Mandy asked but she sounded like she already knew the answer to that. ‘Because a wolf already found us there.’ Maya answered, her eyes intent on the man that now lay panting on the ground. She started to hum lowly and then suddenly the guy yelled and ran himself into the ruined wall. Alex looked at her disapprovingly but Maya just shrugged. ‘I thought it would cause some amnesia…’ she said but trailed of when Alex closed her eyes and shook her head slowly. ‘Let’s go get Ghalia. She should be finishing art class now.’ She said and made her way to the car.
Bruce could feel the feelings radiating off of Alex as they drove to the school, she seemed to be concentrating on something and Rez was holding her hand tightly. ‘Planting the idea.’ Maya explained to him as he looked in his rear view mirror once more. He was worried about her; she seemed upset about something, something a lot more serious than an inexperienced rogue jumping at her throat. Ghalia was waiting for them when they picked her up at school. Just at that moment Alex’s phone rang. She picked it up with a smug smile on her face. ‘Hi Mom.’ She said and the conversation went on as if thought Alex knew nothing about why her “mother” had called about. Alex thanked her mom for being thoughtful and ended the conversation. ‘It’s settled I’m not going home for at least six days. And my parents are going out of town. I hope you have enough space for us at your place. We are going to be there a while.’ She said fixing her gaze on Bruce. He smiled; yes he was now seeing the guardian in her. The part she had been hiding from him, the more responsible side, and the side that knew how to delegate. Suddenly he had the thought of him standing in the shower with her in a block shape on his head, at that image he shuddered. Yes, any man that decided that Alex was the woman for him would have to be very patient and understanding… at all times.
He pulled into the drive way of his home and sighed a long sigh. John was going to be the only one who would be enjoying himself tonight. Poor Ghalia seemed to already be smitten. Alex on the other hand didn’t seem very keen on treating him as anything more than a mere good friend. In a way it angered him but he knew that anger was not going to help him anyhow and that it was somewhat irrational. The fact that she treated him like a gay friend was just another proven fact that a dragon could not be loved, at all. He was a beast trapped in a world where there was no beauty for him. Yes, he was the most desired “boy” in school but he didn’t think of those girls as his beauty, no they were just girls who thought life was about school, keeping friends happy and going to drunken parties that had no real allude. Alex and her friends were different, they knew what was important, and what had to be done, and they loved each other. They loved him, and that’s more than he could ever have asked for. Yes, he decided as they all went into the kitchen to get a bite to eat, even if she felt nothing but friendship for him, he would still be by her side.
‘So, who sent that bonehead to come and exterminate us?’ Maya asked as Alex sat at the antique dresser brushing out her midnight hair. ‘Lisa did.’ She answered and waited for the outburst which came short after. When they had calmed down she told them why her sister wants her dead. 'Aparently Lauren is missing and I'm a suspect.... Well, my new identity. She doesn't know who Alexa Mazur is but I think that she thinks Lauren has some kind of connection to me. And I need to make a few calls to find out where she is.' Alex said and put the phone to her ear.
The phone rang a few times before a hansome voice picked up on the other end.
'Yes?'
