Sighing loudly, Dinah rolled onto her back, rubbing her eyes and staring up at the ceiling. There was a crack there, despite her parents' denial - it was narrow, and probably not an issue, but it was there nonetheless.
She was absolutely sure. She'd spent hours staring at it. Weeks, probably.
Dinah wasn't an insomniac. Or, at least, that was what she told herself. She didn't have an issue, she just...had trouble falling asleep, some nights.
Every night, really.
On Fridays, she rarely slept at all, and sometimes she didn't even try, but tonight was different. This Saturday was Ally's eighteenth birthday, and they were supposed to spend the whole day together, doing anything and everything imaginable. Dinah needed sleep, and she also needed Saturday morning to come faster.
Usually, Ally made the plans, but this year, Dinah hadn't let her, making a pretty convincing case for improvisation being better than any plan, talking about the acting principals of comedians. And Ally, cute little acting nerd that she was, had fallen for it completely.
So Dinah had made the plans, keeping them a secret from Ally. There was a travelling fair in town, a big one with an arcade and tons of food stands and rides, and after waffle house for breakfast, they were going there for the day. She'd win Ally at least three of those giant stuffed bears to make her smile, and then take her on the ferris wheel at dusk, and Ally would get nervous looking over the edge and grab onto her hand.
And, if she was really lucky, Ally wouldn't let go for the rest of the night.
There was so many things Dinah wanted to do with Ally, and she couldn't wait. Except apparently, her brain and body were refusing to let her go to sleep, and so she was stuck waiting, staring at that irritating crack in the ceiling until her vision blurred.
Suddenly, she heard rustling from the tree branches outside her room, and propped herself up tiredly on her arms, peering towards the open window beside her.
"Oh, frick!" the tree hissed.
"Trees don't talk," Dinah said to herself, shaking her head. "Wait, is this a dream?"
The branches rustled again, and then: "Fuck it."
With another mumbled curse and a lot more rustling, Ally was tumbling through the window and into Dinah's room, her eyes wide. There was a thud as she hit the ground, and then bounced back up, a hand on the bed as she stood, running a hand through her hair and brushing a few leaves onto Dinah's floor.
Dinah stared.
"Allyson?"
"Couldn't sleep," Ally said, a little out of breath. "So, I thought we'd start the improvising a little early. It is technically the morning, right?"
"I don't know," Dinah said blankly. "Is it?"
"I think it is," Ally said, frowning, and scrambling to pull her phone out of the pocket of her shorts. She grinned brightly. "Yeah! Four AM."
"Happy birthday, then," Dinah said, getting over her surprise and smiling back. "You're ancient. Maybe even too old for me to be seen with you from now on. You might ruin my image."
"Well then," Ally laughed. "I guess we better have fun together while we still can."
"I guess so." Dinah sat up fully, blinking at Ally.
"We should get ice cream," Ally said decidedly after a moment.
"What, now?"
Ally nodded. "Honestly, that's half the reason I came over here so early," she said. "I really, really want ice cream, but I don't wanna go get it alone. And it's my birthday, so..." she shrugged.
"Ally," Dinah said slowly. "No offense, or anything, but who crawls through someone's window at 4 AM to go for ice cream?"
"Someone who won't take no for an answer," Ally replied quickly, grabbing Dinah's arm and practically dragging her out of bed. "Come on, get dressed. You can pick the flavor, if you want."
"Wow, thanks," said Dinah sarcastically as she stood up, brushing her hair back out of her face. "Not like I was in bed, sleeping or anything."
"You don't sleep on Fridays, honey," Ally said with an endearing smile. "I know you better than that."
"Whatever," Dinah said, rolling her eyes.
"You love me."
"I really, really do," Dinah murmured, smiling at Ally and chucking her under the chin affectionately.
