I woke up to Max's face next to mine, already smiling at me.

"Merry Christmas," he grinned, kissing me briefly. I stretched as he got out of bed. I fell back onto my back, groaning.

"I'm too tired. Cancel Christmas," I spoke in my morning voice.

"It's mandatory," he announced. "Front and center, solider!" he yelled, making me smile and slide out of bed. I saluted him before exiting the room, hearing him follow me.

We ate some breakfast, French toast and bacon, and then I saw all of the presents under the tree.

"Max, I only got you five presents," I told him, wide eyed.

"Yes, and I got you ten," he retorted, hugging me. I felt bad but so excited at the same time.

We took turns opening, and I found by the end that I only had nine presents.

"Where's the tenth one?" I wondered, staring at him.

"Oh, I had to leave it in the room," he told me, standing up to go get it.
Max and I had moved in together about three months earlier, but we had been dating for a year and a half.

He bounded back down the stairs with a giant box. He handed it to me with a grin, and I was confused.

"Open it," he instructed, nodding at me. I opened the box, and there was a smaller box inside. That happened four more times, when I finally got to a wrapped box about the size of my palm.

"That was a lot of work for a small present," I chuckled, seeing him leaning closer to me.

"Guess what it is," he beamed at me.

"Why are you so excited?" I wondered, kissing his cheek.

"Guess," he repeated, running a hand through his hair.

"It's a key to a car," I said excitedly, watching his expression stay the same. "Is it?" I asked, even more excited. He shrugged, making me tear it open, I lifted the lid to the box, glancing up at him. I looked back down, and it was a ring.

And then it dawned on me, and I felt stupid. I turned to see him on his knee, and I should have known this was coming.

"Don't even say anything," I sighed, trying not to explode out of sheer euphoria. "It's already a yes." His eyes went wide and his smile even wider, and he pulled me into what I thought was a hug. He pressed his mouth to mine, sighing through his nose. I kissed him long and hard because he deserved it.

"Merry Christmas," he whispered when I let go.

"Merry Christmas," I repeated, laughing and kissing him once more.
