PS: the gorgeous stallion at top
After class, Shelly and I went to the Academy's stables. Roxy hadn't been in second class. Strange that I only now realised that when Shelly commented on her going home early. I wondered why Roxy had to go but dismissed it—I decided I didn't care.
Our horses were waiting for us, their ears twitching forward in interest. This time, when I saddled up and rode out of the stables, I felt confident on the horse, and that after just one day. Shelly seemed to have cheered up a little and smiled when I told her this news. "I told you! You have the gene, so it's no surprise there. Now we can do some real racing, and this time, you're not beating me!"
We raced, zipping through the streets of Monopolis like maniacs on a wild mission, but I lost. It didn't keep me from laughing the moment we arrived home. "Guess I wore her out yesterday." I patted my horse's mane. "Good girl, I'm proud of you!"
Shelly laughed, and we unsaddled our horses and gave them water. I nudged Shelly and then ran for the house. I could hear her footsteps behind me as she ran to catch up, to win.
Another sound registered in my mind. Hoofbeats. I slowed down, almost at the kitchen entrance. Shelly sensed something wrong and enquired about it.
"Do you leave some of your horses out?" I asked instead of answering, fearing that I might be wrong. Or right.
Shelly's brow puckered. "No, not this time of the day. Why?"
I couldn't hear the hoofbeats anymore, and when I looked at the field, I couldn't see the large bulk of a horse anywhere.
"Nothing."
We walked back to the house. Shelly was still frowning.
"He's about to be here any minute!" Shelly shouted from our shared bedroom. "It's not a date, you know!"
