CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Four Years Ago...

Paige rang the doorbell once before entering the Hayes' house on a Saturday afternoon, the act done to announce her arrival rather than to be ushered in. Logan was in Minnesota for a medical conference and Kayla didn't come home from Girard for the weekend again so her best friend had the house to herself and Paige knew that Jai was too lazy to get the door. She headed straight for the stairs, taking the steps two at a time as she made her way to Jai's room. She knew she was early. But her dad returned from California sooner than expected with a complete limited edition DVD box set of the improvisational comedy show Whose Line Is It Anyway? and she was looking forward to watching it with her best friend.

"Do you need help?" Paige heard Jai ask once she was standing outside her friend's bedroom and wondered if the girl was on the phone or there really was someone else inside other than Jai.

"No. I think I got it." Paige rolled her eyes, her question answered when she heard Emily's voice. "Okay, no, I don't. Take it off me." Paige's eyes widened when she heard those words. Maybe she should've stuck to coming over after four.

"Spread your legs so I can reach for it." Paige heard Jai say, making her uncomfortable. She told herself to move but couldn't so she just stood there, holding her breath. "I can't find it. Turn around. Maybe it's on the other side." Paige creased her brows, now confused. She rapped her knuckles twice on the door before opening it and covered her mouth to hold her laughter but she was too late.

"Nice entrance." Jai retorted, rolling her eyes at the girl.

Paige didn't bother with greeting her friend and just continued laughing, pointing a finger at Emily who was currently standing near Jai's bed with her back turned to the door. The girl had a magazine cutout of a diamond engagement ring stuck on the back of her jeans in the middle of her ass and for some reason Paige found it hilarious.

Emily felt her cheeks flush in embarrassment and she quickly moved her hand over her ass to find the cutout that she was about to add to the vision board she and Jai were making. This made Jai's best friend laugh even harder and she was torn between walking out and grabbing a pillow from her girlfriend's bed to throw at a breathless Paige.

Jai moved to help her girlfriend, standing behind Emily so Paige's view of the girl's ass was blocked. "Got it." She told her girlfriend, showing the cutout when Emily turned around to face her. "Where do you want this?" She asked, gesturing to the vision board on the floor.

"I think it was perfect right where it was a few seconds ago." Paige managed to say between intakes of breath, making Jai roll her eyes again and Emily glare at her. She struggled for composure but ended up chuckling before she finally moved to sit on the chair near Jai's study table. "What the heck is that anyway?" She asked, nodding her head towards the illustration board on the floor. "Your interpretation of the Chaos Theory or something?"

"No. It's our joint vision board." Jai answered, handing Emily the diamond ring so her girlfriend could stick the cutout on the board. "We decided to make one for ourselves after that Social Studies project."

"Why?" Paige uttered, depositing the paper bag containing the DVD box sets she brought with her on top of Jai's desk.

"Do we really have to spell out everything for you?" Emily replied exasperatedly.
