when i awoke the next morning, i realized my mistake. i had left home last night without letting my parents where i was disappearing off to, and i was most likely in deep deep shit. my parents probably wouldn't let me leave the house for a few months.

"fuck, fuck, fuck," i rushed around meghan's room, hurrying to pick up a few things of mine off of her floor.

"just leave them here, i'll bring them to school sometime," meghan mumbled before rolling over to face the wall.

i dropped the things in my arms to the floor and pulled my phone from my back pocket.

Momma

i unlocked my phone to see my moms panic expressed into text messages that she had sent a few hours ago. they were all filled with obvious panic excluding the last, most recent one saying:

meghan's mom called. next time let me know where you are. be smart next time.

oh thank the lord, i'm not in trouble. all i want to do is sleep. i want a good nights sleep for once. so, even though i had already been awake for a little, i crashed into meghan's bed and fell right asleep. it felt like i was at home.

.  .  .

"daniel, i swear to fucking god. she does not want to see you."

"yes she does! she loves me, i love her," he argued.

meghan most likely rolled her eyes and scoffed. i heard the scoff, but i had no way of telling if she actually rolled her eyes at his comment. "if you loved her, you wouldn't have cheated."

i didn't expect to wake up to the sound of my best friend arguing with daniel. i didn't plan on waking up until noon, but i had already discovered that it was 10am. i didn't realize that both of them had stopped their arguing when i had appeared at the bottom of the staircase. great, just great.

"brooke!" daniel exclaimed.

"let him in, meg."

meghan glared at me. "he's not stepping foot in my house. if you guys would like to talk, do it elsewhere. like on my front porch. or maybe just don't talk at all," she said loudly.

i slowly walked towards the door when daniel was standing. "danny, outside please."

his face lit up and he quickly stepped backwards out of the door frame.

turning to meghan, i was faced with a glare that i had never seen before. i slanted my head as if to ask what was wrong. "please be smart."

i nodded, but deep down i knew that without her with me, i'd make a mistake i would regret sooner or later.

daniel was waiting, sitting on the porch swing that had been installed years before meghan had even moved in. his elbows were placed on his knees, his head in his hands. he looked so lost, and was so lost that he didn't notice me standing in front of him. maybe i shouldn't talk to him.

"i'm sorry, you know."

i sighed, not responding with any words. i didn't know what to say, or what to do. i knew that he wanted me to forgive him and jump into his arms and never let go. that would be the easy route, the one i would most likely choose. or i could just tell him that i didn't think we should see each other anymore. but i don't like hurting people, even when they've hurt me. sure, it may not make total sense. but it's part of me i guess.

"i-i got in an argument with my dad that night, and you weren't responding so i didn't have anyone to talk to," he removed his head from his hands and looked in my direction. "i never meant for any of this to happen. i didn't plan on calling another girl that night and i didn't plan on kissing her or seeing you until the next morning."

i didn't answer once again. i still wasn't sure of what to say. i didn't want to give in, but at the same time i did. something about me was curious about the outcome.

"i really am sorry, i'd do anything to get you back."

"you don't have to do anything," i said quietly. "as long as you know what you did wrong and you won't do it again, we're okay. everything's okay."

"oh thank God," he sighed with relief. "i love you so much, brooklyn."

i smiled for a slight second before he wrapped his arms around me. "i love you, too," i said quietly.

.  .  .

he left shortly after, he said he had to get home before his mom realized that he hadn't actually gone to the grocery store.

"brooke, why do you forgive people so easily?" meghan said loudly after i had told her what happened. she looked disappointed, which made me immediately begin to regret my choices. had i made the wrong decision?

"i-i don't know," i whispered. she was disappointed. i disappointed my best friend, the only person i could fully trust in this moment in time. her opinion was one of the most important ones and i had let her down. why does it always seem like i'm letting people down? "i think i should go home."

"no, you can stay, brooke."

i shook my head quickly. "it's okay, meg. i need to get home and talk with my parents. i'll call you later."

she stared at me as i rose from the chair at the kitchen counter that i had been sitting in, then nodded her head. "yeah."
