"Daddy I don't like her," Kellin mumbled quietly as his father fixed his tie. Robert chuckled and ruffled his son's hair.
"She's perfect son, and she's going to be your new mom in a couple of hours," he told Kellin who pouted. Kellin didn't like his soon to be stepmother whatsoever, she was mean to him when his dad was away. And his step sisters, Lynn and Tay were always mean to him, they took his toys, made fun of him for liking to play with dolls and they teased him for wearing girly clothes.
They were mean and always picking on him for something.
His step mother hated him, even for a five year old, he knew when someone didn't like him. And his step mom, Lacey absolutely despised him.
"She's mean," Kellin said softly.
Robert sighed and had Kellin look him in the eyes, "I really love her Kells, I love her a lot. She's the first lady I've really loved since I met your mommy. And we need her son, you need a new mommy and I need a wife." He said quietly, smoothing Kellin's light brown hair back. "Can you promise me that no matter what, you'll always be good for Lacey?"
Kellin nodded, his eyes welling up. He didn't like Lacey at all and he just wanted his mommy, not the mean lady. His mommy was nice and read him bedtime stories and told him she loved him, Lacey didn't do that. She didn't like Kellin. His mommy loved him, she had died a year before and Kellin's dad was heartbroken, from what Kellin saw he was really sad about it and Lacey made him happy.
Keeping that in mind, Kellin said: "Yeah Daddy, I promise I'll always be good for her."
Robert smiled and kissed his son's forehead, "Thank you. Now come on, we don't want to be late for the wedding now do we?"
...
Kellin sniffed and rubbed his teary eyes. It was a year since his daddy had married Lacey and he was gone. He was six now and old enough to understand the concept of death, he knew his daddy was gone and he was never going to come back.
Ever.
"Come on girls, Kellin quit crying and come on," Lacey said sharply as she roughly grabbed onto her stepson's hand and yanked him with her and her two daughters as they went back to the car to go home.
Kellin sighed and tore his hand away, this was going to be his life now. No more good night hugs from his father, no more dad and Kellin days.
Now, he was with Lacey and her kids all of whom hated him and Kellin no longer had his dad, his knight in shining armor to keep him safe from his step mother.
Never again would he have that.
