the time was 3:49, chloe knew this because the unwelcoming light of her phone lit it up against her face. "kalani?" she whispered, making sure not to wake maddie, though she was practically frozen with shock. did kalani just forget what happened all those years ago? and why was she calling that early? "chloe, please. you have to help me." the girl's raspy voice echoed down the phone, making chloe shiver. "kalani? what? where are you? what's going on?" she could have sworn the girl was crying, that only made it worse, kalani did not cry. not in three years of dating her had chloe heard kalani cry. "my parents, chloe. chloe, you have to–" and with that, the phone went dead, leaving chloe, sitting up in bed, confused out of her mind. but she had to help her.
she clambered out of the bed and pulled a cropped jumper over her head, slipping on some leggings and lacing up her converse as quickly as she could manage. she left a note beside maddie, reading:
'had to deal with something, don't worry, love. i'll be home soon xo –chloe.'
she set off in her car, going to the place she and kalani knew as hell on earth. kalani's parents were the craziest catholics living, and they swore 'everyone who practiced homosexuality would going straight to hell.' she knocked on the door reluctantly, before mumbling a sharp "what the fuck are you doing?" to herself, she began to bang it. "let me in you fucking witch, where the hell is she?" eventually, after getting no answer she hauled herself over the fence and grabbed the spare key, she knew where it was kept – under the gnome with the blue hat. she remembered reciting that to herself in school when kalani hadn't turned up, that was the worst day. snapping out of her thoughts, she opened up the back door, the house was completely lit up, but not kalani's room. she hurried up there and her jaw practically dropped to the floor, all she could spit out was "kalani?"
