Harper's POV
It had been a couple days after my walk in the park with Noah, and I hadn't heard a thing from him since then. No calls, no texts, and not even a hello in the halls of the school. I couldn't help but wonder if the walk meant as much to him as it meant to me. From his radio silence, I would assume otherwise. Yet I still wanted to hope...
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Damon coming towards me, interrupting my thoughts. I wondered what it was he wanted to talk about. If it was about Jennifer, I wasn't sure I wanted to hear it. Then again, knowing me, I'll talk to him about her anyway.
"Hey Harper," Damon called out. I stopped and turned to him, then smiled. He walked quickly towards me, running his hand through his hair. Surprisingly, it was more neat than usual.
"Hey Damon," I greeted back as I shifted my weight onto my hip. "What's up?"
"Well," Damon started, a mischievous smile on his face. "I know that what I'm about to ask you is expecting a lot, but you're my last hope and the friend I trust the most." Oh no.
"What is it?" I asked cautiously. I was really regretting what he was about to say. He put his hands together pleadingly before explaining.
"Well, you see, Jennifer's parents will only allow her to go on a date with me if she takes along her brother. No problem with that really. He's a cool guy and all, but..."
"But you want someone to keep him distracted so you can have some alone time with Jennifer," I finished for him. He smiled sweetly. "No, absolutely not. I'm not going on a date with someone I've never met before." or someone that isn't Noah.
"Oh, come on. Please Harper?" Damon pleaded. I shook my head in defiance. In response, Damon got down on his knees. "Get up!" I yelled in exasperation. But he only continued.
"Please, Harper. You're my only hope. I'll do anything. I'll pay for everything. Just please do this for me." Damon pleaded. I groaned in frustration. Don't give in, do not give in to him!
"I'll buy you that black leather jacket you wanted."
I widened my eyes. "Really?" I asked. He nodded eagerly. I really didn't want to do this, but I also really really wanted the leather jacket. I sighed and shook my head. "Alright, but you still pay for everything." I said. He gave me a huge smile.
"You bet," Damon guaranteed as he got off his knees. "Don't worry, I guarantee you it will be the best night of your life!"
"We'll see about that." I said. I shook my head and kept walking into the school building, Damon walking next to me with his hands in his pockets.
"So, how's Noah been?" Damon asked. I felt my chest flutter at his name and I smiled.
"He's good, I guess," I replied nervously. "Why?"
Damon smiled mischievously. He shrugged his shoulders. "Oh, no reason. How is your relationship with him?"
I stopped and turned towards Damon. "Why are you asking that?"
"Because it's obvious you like him."
I felt my face flush red. I thought i did a pretty good job of hiding it. How did he find that out, yet never realize I had a crush on him too? Damon has only seen us around each other twice at the most.
"Don't worry, I'm not going to tell him, and he's oblivious to it, so your secret is safe with me." Damon assured me. "I really think you should move on from him, though."
"Why?" I asked.
"Because either he is too chicken to admit he likes you or he really doesn't see how amazing you are. Shoot, if I wasn't with Jennifer you'd be my next choice!" He let out a laugh. Oh, the irony. His comment made me feel a little odd, but I appreciated the compliment behind the words. "You need a guy that realizes how wonderful you are. I don't think Noah is that guy."
I didn't really know what to say to him. I didn't really want to say anything. It hurt too much, and not knowing if what he said was true or not hurt even more.
"So what's Jennifer's brother like?" I asked. Damon obviously saw that I was trying to change the subject. Thankfully, he went along with it.
"He's a pretty nice-looking guy. He's got brown hair, brown eyes, um... he's not into himself. He... god, how do you girls do this? It's so hard!" Damon complained. I laughed at him.
"It's a practice we learn from a young age. Just tell me if you think he's an okay guy to have as a best friend." I said, trying to make it easier for him.
"Yes."
"Okay, then. That's all I need to know."
I double checked myself in the mirror to make sure I was completely ready. I was a little irritated that Damon told me that our little 'double-date' was tonight, but Connie was understanding of that when I told her about it. She had talked to Damon first though, wanting to know every detail about who Jennifer and her brother were, who their parents were, and all that.
I wasn't going to get all dressed up, but I still wanted to look presentable. So I put on a little eyeliner and red lipstick, but no other makeup than that. I dressed in a white long sleeve shirt, my nicest pair of dark blue jeans, and my cleaned up pair of black and white converse. When Damon came to pick me up, he would come with my brand new leather jacket. I was so excited to finally have it! It would make my collection complete, and I could wear a leather jacket no matter where I'm going.
Satisfied, I went downstairs to the living room to wait for Damon. On the way, however, I overheard Connie on the phone in her office. I leaned against the slightly cracked open door and listened. She was talking to Steve.
"Steve, why are you doing this? To me? To Harper? Do you realize how this is going to affect her? She's had enough to deal with in her life!" What does she mean? What are they talking about?
"You know what, Steve? Fine. Just stay there for two more days and settle what you need to, but then you better come back here so we can talk."
What's going on? I walked away and continued to the living room. Were my suspicions true? Is Steve cheating on her and that's why he's always gone for so long?
As if right on cue, Damon knocked on the door. I practically ran to the door. "Hey," Damon said as he handed me my new jacket. I grabbed it and shut the door behind me.
"Thank you," I said happily as I slipped it on.
"Your welcome," Damon replied. "Ready?"
"Yeah. You?"
"Yeah."
"Okay, let's go."
With that, we went straight into the car and drove off to wherever dinner was going to be. I tried to distract myself with Damon's music, but all the while, I couldn't help but worry what that phone call had been about.
